I would be very cautious about mucking around with your ECU via any kind of scan tool or diagnostic program unless you are fairly knowledgeable about what exactly you are doing. Modfying your ignition timing is a good way to increase performance, but it is also a tremendously easy way to seriously **** up your motor.

 

Did this on the maxima too, as long as you run premium I doubt any risks exist. If knock is detected it will automatically retard it.

 

I'm not too sure about that... if the ECM is being commanded say +4 degree of timing... it might disable knock retard....

 

quick update for you guys , programming still there , everything is still running smooth .My co-worker that performed this for me is a certified Nissan master mechanic.
I will update again in a week or so .

 

Maybe thats why a max of +2 degree is possible with just a scan tool?

 

I had the advanced timing done on my 2 previous FX35s...didn't know it was the same for the G37.

Next time I'll mention it to Infiniti when I'm in for service.
This is safe as long as you use premium fuel 91 octane and above.

 

yeah 2 degrees is all the scan tool allows but 2 is all you need and is very safe

Color me skeptical. I'd like to see a dyno or some track numbers to back up the claimed gains of this "mod".

 

Think it depends on the year. I met one person that was using a cheap
bluetooth ebay one and it didnt work on my car(2013). His I think was a 2008.I just bought a different one and will try tomorrow.

 

Obviously I wouldn't do this if I didn't trust my Nissan technician,that would just be stupid lol.

 

Yes, this was a fairly common mod on Maximas. I had it done (by a tech with a Consult II) on my Gen 7.5 (2007) Maxima. Out of the factory, the Gen 7 Maxima was labeled "premium fuel (91 octane) recommended" (not "required" like on the G37). The Maxima would run fine on 87 octane, but you got some extra HP with premium fuel. Once you advanced the ignition timing 2 degrees you needed to use premium fuel all the time since the ECU could no longer make the necessary adjustments to run properly with regular gas.
