MPG & Other Options
Yup. 7100 rpm power peak. No sense in having all the power at the top of the tach if you dont use it. If I wanted stump pulling low rpm torque and no guts after 5000 rpm I would habe stuck with my turbo subaru.
I am semi-looking at the new 2015 direct injected WRX, test drove it yesterday. Pretty sweet car. Drives better than the G in my opinion but the interior is far less refined. Same loudness from road/wind noise in both. Less roll than the G for sure, and of course the AWD so it has grip thats lasts for days, even on lesser rubber. (Running Pilot Sports on my G now)
Here is the torque curve comparison between the old EJ engine and the new FA engine.

I have the same vehicle as you and get much better MPG
The worst mileage that I got was during very cold weather back in February but it was way better than what you are getting.
I change my air filters between 8 and 10k miles. Only takes 3 minutes.
If you haven't changed yours for 20k miles that could be the source of your problem

Which Subaru did you have?

If you drove a WRX I assume it was 6MT? You should try a 6MT G37S with the upgraded suspension, as it is much more comparable, unless you absolutely need AWD. I considered an STi instead of my G but wanted something more refined.
MPG is first about driving style, second about the car. If you, um, fully utilize the available HP in the car, like gunning it at red lights and quick deceleration at each stop, you'll suffer from lower mpg. 12-15 sounds like you either keep the pedal to the floor and drive 100% city or that your car needs a once over at the mechanic. It's possible that you have something or things really putting a drag on the drivetrain. Or you need to stop towing a boat with your G
Try resetting the mpg and driving like a grandma for at least 1/4 of a tank and see how you do.

So I have been using Automatic (https://www.automatic.com) and thats reporting a 12MPG. The car itself is reporting 17. Both suck, lol.
That said, I have been trying to be extremely conscious a la not fun driving at all, nothing over 65, no hard braking or acceleration (nothing over 3-4k RPM).
So I am kind of baffled by said MPG I am getting.

Reset vehicle computer.
Drive 1 mile from gas station

to New Jersey Turnpike to Garden State Parkway.
No stops, no cruise control, drive 50 miles to work, outside temperature 70 degrees, low humidity
Good mileage

I have been driving like a grandma, did a reset of the MPG computer, got 18 on the way home. 50 MPH highway almost the whole way.
Something is up...
While I agree, the G is much much much more capable from a speed perspective, I can't really use any of that around here, so I am finding it plus the 93 octane required painful...
I think the gas formulations in your area have a lot to do with it too. My old WRX was also pretty bad with this California gas, while on the east coast it did a little better.
