No it's an actual cat failure - the honeycomb catalyst starting breaking loose inside the metal body. The heat shields were fine. You could shake the cat once off the car and hear the medium rattling around inside. Unfortunately no CEL was thrown probably because it was still functioning enough.

It's pretty embarrassing at the number of times my car just dies upon startup or has some sort of weird glitch and how cheap the interior sounds and how my transmission feels like its slipping even though I know it isn't. I like this car but I just don't love it. It's going to the dealer for warranty work on Friday and if they can sort out the issues I may keep it for a few years since it's almost paid off.
Id have to say that in talking to other G owners your car seems to be the exception to the rule. Case in point, my G just turned 90K last week; no mechanical issues, car runs great and has only one rattle when the twin 10" subs hit

I have 68k on my 08 Sport, in which the only rattle or noise I hear comes from my throw out bearing. Clutch feels great, just a little noisier then it was 20k ago. Also, you should probably avoid German cars...that is if you want to be considered a D bag. Just my opinion considering the amount of German D bag enthusiasts here in Las Vegas

Haven't seen much about that around here.. Someone should do a search.

I know this happened with some of the older 4 cylinder nissan which had pre cat failures. But, I hadn't heard of our cars experiencing this commonly.

Interesting, so the rattle in the video was not the engine but the Cat? I didn't detect anything like the fillament rattling around in there, at least not what one would think it would sound like(jar of coins in exhaust)

Glad I could be of service ANMVQ!

Another cat bites the dust... I'm convinced these cars are plagued with junky converters. At least you got it fixed under warranty and I'm really glad it wasn't rod knock (kiss of death). Do you have an extended warranty, what did they cover this under? Right now the dealer won't replace mine because my base is out and they need the car to throw a CEL to start a replacement under the emissions coverage.

Sounds like you have an excuse to get some HFC's!

They replaced mine under the factory warranty I'm still under powertrain
But I do the the Infiniti wrap extended till 118k . The cats tho are federal emissions no? Should be 8 80k I think ?

I'm also under powertrain, but they won't replace. I contacted Infiniti Consumer Affairs on this one to inquire about a replacement and they told me if needs to be throwing a code to prove it's bad. 8/80k is federal emissions coverage. At least I got the driver's side one replaced under base warranty... we'll see how much worse the noise gets or if the cat eventually fails complete. I'm hoping for that code!

So glad to "hear" that it wasn't an internal motor issue, hope that smile's back on your face again.
