Has your friend or ex friend as the case may be, agreed to pay for the damage? If not, you will have to sue him and you certainly should if he refuses to pay for the damage to your car.
If he's going to sue his friend, then it is better to use his own insurance for this. Did he file a police report as required by law at the scene? Lawsuits require lots of proof and his friend could easily say he wasn't driving. If he did property damage to a city object and left that is an offense of leaving the scene of accident.
If the friend refuses to pay then it would be easier for the OP to submit this claim to insurance company. Although there most likely would be a rate increase, the OP would not be paying $3k out of pocket all on one go.

Also Can the mechanic configure my key to open the new electronic door? Since it's a wireless key and all. Or do I have to go to an infiniti dealership.
It doesn't need to be configured, just hooked up to the BCM. BCM is what controls the connection between your key and the door.
The BCM is located in the passenger side in the footwell, so this is no big deal. You don't need to configure the key for this repair. If your BCM was somehow damaged or your key was lost then the dealer or locksmith would have to reset/replace the BCM with new key codes.
