24 hours with the new G37x

Well, I picked up a 2012 G37x with 20k on the ODO this weekend. The deal was too good and I got exactly what I wanted on my trade-in, so I jumped on it. I was initially in the market for an Acura TL AWD as I was really dead-set on a manual, but I couldn't get a fair deal, so I walked.

So far, I absolutely LOVE this car. I had an 07 Civic SI before this, and while it was turbo'd and making gobs of power, this car just feels quicker, due to the AWD and low-end torque relative to what that civic was putting out. The refinement, smoothness, etc. is just in such another class (as to be expected, of course), I'm sad I didn't make the move sooner.

My only complaint is the transmission - it's smooth, but for a "sports" sedan, it performs no better than the average automatic. I feel like the shifts should be a little more aggressive, and certainly a bit faster. The motor feels great and it's a bit hampered by the automatic. Other than that, really fantastic car and I can't wait to put some money into it. I don't know if I'm going to dabble into performance this time, but the car definitely needs a slight drop and some bigger wheels as it looks a bit awkward with the small wheels it came with IMO. Definitely looking forward to joining this community, though, seems like there are some really solid enthusiasts on here. Few crappy cell pics from this weekend, for now:

Also, side question since this is bugging me - is there anyway to turn on just the accessories of the car without turning on the car initially? I can only seem to get it to do this if I turn the car off from running, and then hit the start button without the brake depressed. If I try doing this from a cold start, it just tells me to press the brake and does nothing.

Thanks!

Congrats on the new car. Do you have any mods planned for it?

Thanks!
Just touch the push start without your foot on the brake pedal and the electronics will turn on without the engine coming on.

Damn, I swear I tried that and it just told me to push the brake in. Gotta go give that a try again.

And so far, only a small drop and some bigger wheels. I just lost a boatload of money on my civic from all of the mods I did and I'm not sure I want the hassle of that again, as temping as a TT or SC setup is. I may or may not do a lip kit at some point to give the car a bit more of an aggressive look, too.

ha, good luck with the "one or two mods" idea. After I lost all of the mod $ I poured into my cooper s (well over $10k,) I swore I wouldn't do it again.

And then...I lost count somewhere around $15k in mods on this car..it's addictive.

BTW..as a fellow X owner..your first mod has to be the journey rear swaybar. Research if you must, but take my word for it regardless, and pick one up on ebay used for about $30 or so (parts dealers have no idea that the journey sway is identical to the "s" sway, and think it's just a throwaway.)

It's the single best performance mod (on a budget!) you can do to this car - makes a world of difference handling-wise, especially if you combine it with a drop.

re: a lip, a new one just popped up on ebay for the non-sport 2010+ bumper, and it's actually pretty good looking. Also extremely cheap.

re: a small drop - virtually any drop on this car will likely result in the need for rear camber arms and or toe bolts. Eibachs on my X needed the rear arms. I didn't install the bolts, but I probably should have; my toe is slightly out of spec.

Since just springs kill the shocks, and you're in there anyway, new shocks wouldn't hurt. The only mfr out there - apart from something jdm and crazily expensive - is kyb. I opted for those, and while they're not exactly high-performance, they're slightly stiffer than stock.

hth...gl with the new ride!!

I had a "missing" transmission TSB, once that was applied I noticed a difference. In all honesty though, it could just be that the trans is adapting to my driving as opposed to the previous owners' ('10 x sedan). But yes, the shifting does leave a little bit to be desired. I'm using DS a lot more now than previously.

I have 18s on mine now and will be swapping over to a squared set of Rays in the near future. No drop yet, struggling with the decision.

Congrats, glad you're enjoying it!

Congrats on picking up your new G, glad you were able to get past the styling issues as per your other thread. Looks like a nice clean G you found, and like already stated, good luck just keeping it to a couple mods

Yeah, we'll see, I never meant to mod my SI much either and I wound up dumping over 10 grand into it to turbo it and whatnot, haha. I feel like there isn't much point in doing performance mods to this car due to the somewhat lazy transmission, but perhaps I'll change my mind. Definitely some kind of coilover kit and wheels, though.

Dude I just bought my 2012 G37x yesterday as well. Although I got the coupe. My trans feels good, BUT I did test drive a 2012 G37x sedan and I noticed a marked difference and when I mentioned this to the salesperson and they gave the same lame excuse about adaptive shifting due to the previous owner.

Congrats!! I like the white color!

When I got my G37x last year I was also initially going to buy an Acura TL AWD. However I quickly learned that the TL uses outdated technology (e.g. 5-speed auto tranny), it's overweight and like you, Acura offered me unfavorable trade-in conditions.

This seems to be a trend, I too was looking at Acura before I snagged my 2010 G37 sedan...lol In moonlight of course!

I just got my "ebay" front lip that fits your style front bumper...but it was warped and after about an hour with a blow dryer and some heavy stuff I got it back right again. I'm also adding a stillen trunk lip spoiler as well but, my ride is ironically at the dealer as we speak getting the infamous Tranny TSB reflash. We will see how it responds.

Moonlight White is nice.

Here's a mod you can do without breaking the bank.
