Malfunctioning Steering Lock

HI all,

Hoping for some direction here. I have an 09 G37 base sedan. I went to start her up the other morning and nothing happened. I had her towed to the dealer only to be hit with an estimate for $1600.

According to the dealer, the steering lock has malfunctioned and is preventing the car from starting. Some how its all linked together in the electronics.

My car has 64000 miles and no extended warranty. I did some research on this part and it appears it was recalled by Nissan but not by Infiniti. I filed a case with Infinitii Consumer Affairs but it was Denied. I sent an email earlier today to Nissan Headquarters in Japan, but I dont want to just sit around waiting on a response. (I also cannot stand driving a ford fusion much longer)

Has anyone else experience this problem or been able to get Infiniti to cover repairs beyond the warranty, and can offer advice?

Thanks

I had a similar experience with my 06 G35 that required a new wiring harness due to a flashing air bag warning light. I was out of warranty and the dealer wanted $2400.00 for the repair. I had purchased the extended warranty from the dealer but that had expired as I had 137k miles on my car.
I was able to argue successfully that the defective harness should have been diagnosed on my earlier five visits for the same problem while under warranty. We ended up splitting the cost three ways between myself, the dealer, and Infiniti Customer Service.

Price out a new one and see how much they will give you on a trade in

Good luck

Best case scenario:
If Infiniti later decides to extend the warranty on this you can get reimbursement from Infiniti Corporate for the cost of repairs.

Worst case scenario:
You have to pay out of pocket to have this fixed since your car is out of warranty and there's no extended warranty coverage on the steering lock.

I would just get this fixed regardless and pay for it. If there is an extended warranty applicable later, you can always file for reimbursement.

It is common(not super common) on the 09/10 370z/maximas/gtrs/fx35s.

The motor they use burns out and it triggers the immobilizer unit. It is not however common on the Gs since they use a different part number. Maybe your G has the affected motor. Easiest way to make sure it doesn't happen is to pop the fuse. Steering wheel wont lock but its not like that matters.

Resolution

After several days of communications with Infiniti and Nissan reps in the US and Japan I was not able to get them to cover any portion of the repair or parts. The did acknowledge that the lock was recalled by Nissan, but not Infiniti.

I talked the dealer into letting me provide the part to them. I was able to get the past from dicountinfinitiparts.com for $599 instead of the $950 my dealer wanted.

While the part was in the mail I did receive a 20% of labor coupon from my local dealer so the Labor portion is setting me back another $380.

So I am out of pocket almost $1000 for a part that they knew was defective. Every step of the way I was made to feel like a 2nd class owner because I bought the car used.

The new Q50 better be amazing or I will be buying a BMW next time.

I can fully understand your anger from this but saying that you will be buying a BMW as a result of a costly repair from Infiniti and arrogant customer service is like saying you find living in the U.S. too dangerous so you're moving to Iraq.

It gets better. Picked up my G last night frm the dealer only to find out the tow truck damaged the front bumper getting it onto the bed. luckily I had my insurance company do the towing so they have to deal with it.
