Q50 Review

What I think might be the first Q50 review.

Not a great one either. They seemed to like the exterior but not much else.

Interesting that they note how much better the car looks in person vs watching it spin around at an auto show.

And it still bothers the livin heck outta me that they didnt put a cover on the damn cup holders in the console.

this was a telling series of text from the article:

"...what we have here with the 2014 Infiniti Q50 is not so much an all-new sport sedan as a rebodied and refreshed G37. The Q50 sedan still rides on the familiar FM platform and is powered by the same 3.7-liter V-6 mated to the same seven-speed automatic transmission. Infiniti no longer offers a manual transmission, although product planners claim they are lobbying for one because, of course, you can get one in the BMW 3-series and the Audi A4, if not the new Lexus IS."

the latter part may lead to good news down the road, but the first part is what we already knew to be true. which is why, overall, the 2014 Q50 is a dissapointment to the brand-loyalists.

Technology overkill. I like gadgets, but not enough where they can take me out of the driving equation. I wish they would have concentrated on performance improvements instead of tech improvements, but I know the enthusiasts are the minority. I also like how the Edmunds review managed to bash the manual G's of the past.

I'd like to know what they're going to charge for the 2014 G's. With the ridiculous lease deals, new Q50 out, and now offering the lower priced model the resale value will be going downhill fast.

Guess it's a good thing I plan to keep mine until my extended warranty runs out in 2020 so resale doesn't really matter. I think a lot of customers looking to trade their G's in on a new Q in the next few years will be surprised by the low trade in values and might jump ship to another brand.

Just not very impressive, I was really hoping for more and maybe that is to come in the next couple of years.

I drove a Ford Edge recently and the tech package was overwheling. It was very distracting for the driver as there was just too much. Some things need to be kept simple and just because the technology is out there doesn't mean we have to use every single bit of it in a vehicle. Just because you have a dash display doesn't mean it won't take your eyes off the road. Having a car drive for you is probably the future so you might as well get used to it. Not happy about it but it is coming. Hopefully I will be dead before that happens!

I still want to sit in one since I feel the interior could be a lot more plush on my G37.

I too would have liked to seen SOMETHING done with the drivetrain. At least the transmission, maybe eek a little extra power out of the engine, but mostly I wished they tweaked the transmission. Maybe they did, I dont know. And Im not sure test driving one will even tell the answer since the 7AT seems to work OK for weeks to months at a time, then revert to less performance for some reason.

Maybe the "big things" are in store for the Q60? Would a DSG be too much to ask?

Why would they do all LED external lighting except for the rear license plate lights and rear turn signals? That makes no sense

"In our case, the Q50 rolled on 225/55/17 all-season Bridgestone run-flats that were hopelessly overmatched by the chassis. There is so little grip that it's as though somebody accidentally mixed clay into their carcasses instead of silica. As a result, when given the mere suggestion of spirited cornering, the front tires protest audibly and early before washing out into understeer. This lack of enthusiasm was reflected in its meager skid pad performance of 0.79g and lackadaisical 60.9-mph slalom result."

I don't care if they tested the non-S version. That is still unacceptable for what Infiniti claim to be a "sports" sedan. Looks like the enthusiasts will be moving over to BMW.

They did net 1city/3Hwy miles - thats quite an improvement. Believe me when I say it but DSG has its own issues. Not sure it would make an acceptable replacement for most of Infiniti's target audience.
