Ouch, that is definitely more than just a fender bender man, the whole front half of the car is bent. Is there any structure damage?

Blessing in disguise and probably best case scenario for your friend. Insurance will pay for the car and he doesn't get dinged for the mileage as bad as he would have returning the car after lease. Totaled for sure, no question.

Ill take a guess & say yes, the car looks twisted.
Was making a joke about fender bender, this is smashed.
The car did its job, not a scratch on my friend.

Id say its done.
I had a lot of front end damage on my G35.
To replace all the front end it was almost $15K with labor.
Depending on the year it maybe time to look for a new car.

He said he was glad he leased a base model with nav.
Now looking back, it was a good idea.
Options on these cars add up quickly.

Keep us posted in this thread RG, I'm curious what the damage estimate comes out to, I'm guessing at least 15k. And let us know how the boy is feeling a couple weeks down the road, these kind of accidents tend to have lingering effects.

Yea, I know 1st hand.
Got rear ended by a hungover coworker, kept joking with her until I found out.
I had a spinal cord injury, 2 level c4,c5 disc ruptured.
Was out of work for 6 months & almost lost my house.
Insurance company was jerking me around(big surprise).
Until they busted out the surgical saws, it was a game to them.
Walked around in pain for 2 months til discovered by neurosurgeon.

Will keep you guys posted, he's a young guy.
Scary thing was only ds airbag went off, no side curtain?

its just a car he will be alright just gives him an excuse to get a new one....as long as hes okay thats all that matters... but yes totaled leases go as a total loss hopefully you bought gap insurance when you leased just incase

From what I see it looks done, what do you think.

If its not totaled its borderline, he's trying brace for the worse.
I would assume that your son was stopped and not rolling/moving forward already when this happened as you weren't specific. It could produce far less rear end damage than most would assume, from only seeing that one pic of the front end only. So, not enough info or pics for me to begin to guess, good luck to him though.

You're wondering why the side airbag didn't go off? So, you think that in the case of a rear end / front end collision only, that the side airbags should have gone off too??.

Let's imagine an accident that starts with someone as the first to stop and wait at a red light or a train crossing. That car is violently hit from behind and pushed forward into the path of a train or other crossing traffic. At that instant, no airbags are deployed. Then, the car that was hit from behind, hits a light pole on the other side of the street, smashing the front, hard enough to deploy the front drivers side airbag (at the correct moment in time) but not the passengers side cause that seat is not occupied and the car is so "smart" it knows this. Then, a couple seconds later, the car is hit on the side by another car coming from the left, and then and only then, the side airbag deploys at the right moment, not earlier, because that would decrease the efficiency of the air bag as they deflate shortly after inflating by design.
I hope this helps you understand why the side airbags didn't go off, basically the car is "smart". Thank God the car is smart enough to work this way, the technology is certainly there, why wouldn't one use it?

He's a good friend of mine, not my son. That's kinda funny.
He is a close friend, not my son.
Using slang he's my boy(close friend)
Once I got blasted in my coupe, no airbags deployed.
Front end had over 15k in damage, wasnt to happy about that.
I'm quite versed in how airbags work, or in this case lack of.
The airbags job is to protect the driver, ive seen light hits engage side front & passenger passengers airbags even wothout passengers in the car.

Fact is he had a high speed contact with one airbag is still wierd.

If there was no one in the passenger seat when he got into the accident that would explain why only the driver's side airbag deployed...

In February my convertible was totaled. got hit by a minivan going about 60 from behind. My airbags didn't deploy... thought that was strange too. Walked away from it so I guess these cars do their job safety wise.

Yes they do.
One of my friends hit his coupe into a guardrail at a decent speed.

The wheel & spindle completely separated.

Car was demolished, driver not a scratch.
