Do you have to drive this car a certain way? Horrible MPG...

I have a 2013 G37 RWD Sedan for a rental car for about a week. I love the performance of this car (I drive a TSX.. no competition).

However, the advertised MPG is 19/27 city/HW... I am getting 19.5 with 70% HW..

Yea yea, I know... if you drive a performance car, don't expect great mpg.. but I would alteast like to get the estimated 22 city/HW mix.

I don't have a lead foot and its really weird.. because sometimes I see the mpg go up while city driving.. Is the best speed to cruise at around 70 to get the best mpg?

I'm thinking of buying a G37 (not a Q50) instead of an Audi Avant due to this rental but the mpg is atrocious considering I am pretty conservative with the driving.

BTW: searhc engine doesn't work so I cant search for mpg threads...

19.5 mpg? Seems like you're not having much fun with the rental. Haha
That number seems to fit right due to 70% of the driving being done in the HWY.
i'm currently getting 16.4 mpg. But 60% of my driving is in the city.
But like brizey said there is an MPG thread posted somewhere.

yeah search engine was down for a while.

19.5 sounds about right

I have a 6MT and found that 60 in 6th gear is the optimum cruising speed. The key is to be able to hold the speed constant with the least amount of pedal pressure possible and that's probably about a centimeter. Not sure about a 7AT though. I drive all street and get about 17mpg. Luckily I work 1.8miles from home and take a 100 mile trip every two weeks, so a tank lasts me two weeks. The 100 mile trip gets me 26mpg, but then mixing in the daily street usually drops that to about 20 in a couple days and then to 17 after few days later and stays there until I need gas again. It's not just the cars efficiency when rolling that counts, idling hits my mpg pretty heavily as well.

It sounds about right.

I think idling is a huge drain on our cars. That said, like dgglr, I have found either 60 in 6th or 80 in 6th to be ideal for fuel economy. I also have a 6mt. I also do a 30/70 mix between city and highway, I average 20.2.

I drove my G37S from NJ to Florida in December 2012
My MPG for the trip down was 1234 miles and used 48.745 gallons of 87 octane regular for an overall MPG 25.31.
This was with a passenger and luggage.
On the return trip I used 50.47 gallons for an overall 25.21 MPG
This was all on cruise control never exceeding the speed limit more than 5 MPH. 65MPH in most places 70 MPH in some places.

Why would you worry about MPG in a car you'll only be driving for a week??

Just have a blast I'd say

The G37 is not really sensitive to driving styles. I've tried both end the best I can, didn't see much of a differences. The big 6 is not like the little turbo 4 many cars have that makes night-and-day difference depends on how you drive it. If you do a lot of short trips, it is normal to see it below 20, winter gas, and the cold weather the northeast is seeing these days also played a huge role of significantly lowering your mpg by at least 10%.

I get around 22.5 in mixed driving What kills the mileage is the 10 mile stop and go backup on some trips to the office.

On the highway, with light pedal pressure at 65, easily get 28 mpg.

This on the g37x.

Yes and I used it for the 171796 miles that I put on my 06 G35

My 401k plan loves the savings

You don't hear your engine pinging or anything ?

I remember when hurricane sandy hit no gas stations had 93 and it killed me to put in 87 but I had no choice, and the engine sounded horrendous. I tried not to beat on the car at all with the 87 in there.

Knock sensors are there to retard the timing if the octane is too low. I filled up with 87 once just to see what the fuss was about and noticed no difference over 400 miles. I dunno. I always use 89.
Maybe Infiniti wants us to put premium in our cars to make us feel like we truly have an extraordinary vehicle, and to look rich at the pump...
Sure you can lose 10 hp in the top end, but who would notice that?
BTW, I average 10.9 L/100km 20/80 city/hwy on 89.

I always use 87 on long road trips since you aren't pushing the motor hard and notice no change in mpg or performance.
