It really depends on how dark you want to go...most areas have a limit of 35% like here in Massachusetts.
The factory tint is already around 10%, so I went with 45% all-around...front & rear sides and rear back window.
As NJ Torque posted, it also depends on the interior color...it will look darker if you have a dark interior.
Here is where you can find out your states tint limit:

As dark as they will allow you to go...BUT...I prefer to keep the side windows all even...some states let you do the rear sides darker, but I don't like the look.
I have max ceramic on the sides and one shade darker on the rear. Not a fan of the overdone blacked out rear.
If your car is "colorless" (white/black/silver/gray) then make sure your tint is pure black...again, just my preference.

Quality of film makes a huge difference I've always had 5% on all my cars done by a friend and aside from one truck which was tinted by someone else I've had no issues seeing out day or night. The one done by a dif person used crappy tint and couldn't see out even on a sunny day.

but be sure you are willing to eat that tint ticket if your state has a max of 35% states are the worse for writing those tickets i didn't want to deal with it this go around so i just went 35 but everyday i wish i went 20. maybe over the summer i will rethink it some more.

I went as dark as legal (18% rear and 35% front with 10% window strip) and all ceramic (which I highly recommend). Whatever you do do NOT get tint with any type of dye in it. The dye is what ends up fading after a couple of years. Yes ceramic is more expensive but it wont fade and there is less interference with your electrical equipment, or so I was told. I do not have any problems with visibility at night. Eventually I plan of going 18% all around, but not at the moment.

I'm running 35 up front and 20 on sides and rear. I actually wouldn't mind having 20 all around. Maybe if I get a ticket ill take it off then put back 20 haha damn California laws

I have 20% on the front and 5% on the rear windows and rear windshield.
You cant see in the rear at all.
I mainly use 5% so that my daughter wouldn't get blinded by the sun in her car seat

can anyone recommend or if possible post photos of a car with stone interior with tinted windows (specify %)?
My prev car had a black interior and I had 35% tint on sides and rear and it looked nice to me, but I'm thinking 35% might look too light with the light grey/taupe interior now
TIA
