Guy new to Infiniti and Nissan here looking for opinion and/or advice

Hi I just joined here mainly to ask more experienced people here a few questions. I just bought myself a truck back in September after my previous car got totalled, and I'm already looking to get something different as I miss having a car. I recently came across an 09 Infiniti G37 Sport Sedan at a dealership near me that sparks my interest. I do however have a couple concerns with the car so I figured it wouldn't hurt to come on here and ask people for their opinion on it and see if it would be worth what I would have to pay for it. The car I am looking at as I said is an 09 G37 Sport Sedan. It has about 81,000 miles on it and a 6 speed transmission, which honestly is what stood out to me the most as I wouldn't really be interested in the car if wasn't a 6 speed. That being said, the high mileage does concern me a bit, as that's a lot of miles on a car that's barely 4 years old. When I test drove the car it drove great and the motor felt good as well. It didn't seem to have any problems revving or idling at all, and was fairly smooth when just cruising along. I could however smell burning coming from the clutch after the test drive was over, but chances are I think that had more to do with the fact that I hadn't drove a manuel transmission since the end of August when my last car got totalled than anything else. I mean it shifted very smoothly with no problems or slippage and the gearbox felt nice as well. I especially liked the short shifter. The dealership unfortunately couldn't tell me if the clutch was still the original clutch or if it had been replaced with a new one. The only other problem it had was that the battery didn't have enough power to start the car initially and it needed a jump. But it was fairly cold outside here yesterday and that might have had something to do with it as well. It did start right up after the dealership gave it a jump with it's little jump start machine. But as I said in my title, I'm not very familiar with Nissan or Infiniti, and I really don't know how reliable they are once the mileage starts to build up. If I was to buy the car, it would of course be my daily driver, and I'm likely going to have to finance it for probably 4 or 5 years. I guess what I'm looking for here is if some of you more seasoned folks on here think it's worth it for me to buy the car. I realize without actually seeing or driving the car, there's not really much for you to base your opinions on, but the car itself seemed very clean and in very good working order to me. I'm just concerned with the mileage mainly, as I don't really want to be paying nearly $21,000 for a car plus interest if it's just going to spend a lot of time in the shop getting fixed. Sorry for the long drawn out post. I tend to do that sometimes unfortunately. Thanks to everyone for their for their help and opinions as well.

Generally Nissan/Infiniti are very good with long term reliability. I've had a lot of them. Currently a G coupe, a G sedan, and a 96 Maxima with over 200K that's still pretty reliable. That being said, 80K is fairly high mileage on an 09. Also the potential clutch issue is concerning. It could be time for replacement. The dead battery as well. There is a TSB to replace a vent control valve that applies to some cars that have an issue with battery drain. You can find info in the TSB forum about it.

All things considered, I might look for a different one if it were me.

First off, welcome to the forums.

As with any car with high mileage you will come across some problems. It all depends on how well the car was maintained and unless you know the previous owner you will never really know how the car was treated. Like Black Betty said, these cars are pretty reliable. In all honesty there are plenty of G's with less miles out there for around the same price range, they may not have the 6mt, but the mileage would be a lot less. If I were you I would pass on this one and look for a 2007+ G35 6mt, they should be less in price as well as less in mileage.

Edit: I just did a quick search for G35S 6mt and for $21,000ish you can get one with between 41,000-60,000 miles on it. I think that's your best bet.

I agree with Black Betty. Infinitis are generally very durable and while 80K isn't a lot of mileage, your demo might have one that's been driven hard and put away wet. One way to address this might be to make the deal contingent upon the dealer (particularly if it's an Infiniti dealer) install a new clutch and battery. While the price is in line with the mileage, be aware the introduction of the G's successor (2014 Q5 sedan) in a few weeks at the NAIAS will drop overall pricing for the G37S.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your input. The VCV issue was something that I was unaware of. Black Betty, if you could give me more info on it or post a link I'd greatly appreciate it as well. Unfortunately, it's not at an Infiniti dealership, it's at a Carmax. I'd rather buy it from an Infiniti or Nissan dealership personally, but since I just bought my truck back in September and still owe a considerable amount it, Carmax is really the only place I'm able to deal with since they're willing to buy my truck from me and pay off my existing loan. I think I'll take dkmura's advice and see if they're willing to install a new clutch(or at least see if it's been replaced recently) and have them look more into the VCV issue as well, otherwise I'll likely end up passing on the car. Thanks again for everyone's help.

Edit: I believe I was able to find the TSB for the VCV issue. It's the ITB10-010B thing correct? Does this only apply to the coupe, or does it apply to the sedan as well?
