My Up Coming Project
When are you going to do this? Even though I am a charter member of the Plasti Dip Haters of America Club, I hope it turns out good for you and I'm interested to see the results. Are you doing this at home yourself or having a paint/body shop do it?
Hmm... i think you're better off with a real spray gun powered by a compressor. Reviews of this Wagner have been mixed and have trouble with certain products which has similar consistency to PD.
But if you can get it working, kudos!

Yeah, Mike, I read the reviews of this gun and it seems to only work well with thin fluids. But I did talk to Fonzi from dipyourcar.com and he personally recommended this gun for the already pre-thinned gallons of plasti-dip. But if it doesn't work well I can still use it to paint my fence and walls, LOL. Wish me luck man.
LMAO!!! YOu are something else, Jeremy. Yeah I'll be spraying this in my garage. I hope this turns out at decent since this is the first time. I'll keep you posted.
So i changed my mind on the color. It will no longer be red. I will be spraying it a gunmetal grey this weekend. I'll post step by step details and photos along the way.
So it begins. I am have started on the long process of plastidipping my car. The first part that i am beginning with is the chrome window trim. I know a lot of people out there have wondered how to black out the trim other than vinyl wrapping it. The only other member that I know that's plasti-dipped their chrome trim is Cereal2K.
Ok so the first step is figuring out what you will need. 1)Plastidip (I used 1 1/2 cans) 2) painters tape 3) razor blade 4) Optional - I used the comfort grip for the spray can.

Than you will need to cover the windows. There is a small trick to tapping these up. You will need to cover half of the upper and lower weather strip along the windows with the painters tape so that you when its time to remove the tape the plastidip will cut along the premade gaps that the window and weather strip makes. And also you will be able to peel it back if the cut isn't as smooth as you would like it.
Another thing is to leave about a quarter inch gap between the bottom chrome trim and the tape. Its ok that the paint shows. That is what you want.

Now its time to paint. Remember that the first coat does not need to cover the chrome trim 100%. BUT you do need a nice think enough coat where it lays down wet. You have a very small forgiveness zone when spraying with plastidip. About 5"-6" is all you will have. If you spray any closer the platidip will run. If you spray to far away the plastidip will not bond right leaving you with the gritty sand paper feel when it dries. Believe me, I found out the hard way. You want a super smooth finish when it dries so 5"-6" spray distance is all you will have. Leave the plastidip to dry for 30 minutes between each coat. You must allow it to cure before applying the next few coats.

The next few coats will be the same. You will need to maintain a constant flow to give it an even coat. Remember to keep the distance between 5"-6" and spray it on to where it looks wet but not thick and running. i would highly suggest you get a minimum of 4 coats but no more than 6 coats. You want to lay the plastidip on to where it is thick enough to peel off. Too few coats and its going to be a PITA to remove because you will not be able to peel it off in one strip. You'll be rubbing it off for days if its not thick enough.

After 4-5 good coats and allowing a 30 minute cure time between each coat, let the car bake in the sun for a good hour before you start removing the tape. Be careful when you start peeling it along the weather strip. To much of a pull will yank the entire plastidip off and not enough tug wont tear it. Use a razor or exacto knife if needed to make precision cuts along the strip.
I will post up pics of the final product up tomorrow when i take some.

Ok so here is what the final results should look like. Its kind of dirty because it started sprinkling the day after. But if you look closely its very smooth and not grainy.

I dipped my diffuser as well. It was gloss black before.
