4dsc

Back in 1988, with the 3rd generation Maxima, NISSAN started a marketing promotion where they referred to the Maxima as a Four Door Sports Car, or 4DSC for short. They put a single, exterior window decal on the car. The design was kind of ugly (IMO), but the intent was clever.

Fast forward to 2009, and the 7th Generation Maxima. NISSAN re-introduced the 4DSC concept, and put an interior window sticker on both sides of the car. The design was somewhat more edgy, but still not terribly attractive (IMO).

However, what was attractive was the pre-production decal design that NISSAN had on the car while it made the auto circuit. Here's an example, in the bottom left corner of this image, with the original decal at the top for comparison.

I really liked that pre-production decal, but without the actual words "4 door sports car"... just the letters. So some years ago I came up with a derivative design, and a friend over on Maxima.org has been making them for Org members. Hundreds and hundreds of them. It's pretty cool.

Lately, I got to thinking, between any model Maxima as compared to a G37S Sedan 6MT, which one is truly a 4DSC? And I think we all know the answer to that one...

This here is an exterior decal, etched in translucent silver. Not sure how I feel in the long run, but for the moment, I rather like it. Particularly since it's my own (derivative) design.

Go ahead... love, hate or indifferent. I'm just putting it out there.

[edit] Dec 2013; Ed just wrote me to let me know he's no longer cutting vinyl in that "frost" material anymore. He'll still fill 4DSC orders, just no longer in that material.

My rental in California right now is a 2012 Maxima.

Fairly impressed with this car. Has a LOT of power, and handles phenomenally for a car this size with FWD. I had a lot of fun running it down the PCH and really getting a feel.

After 1400 miles so far in this car, I like it a lot. We have begun to bond. Going to be sad when I turn it in tonight.

Although, it is no G lol.

Actually, looks really nice. It's just a decal anyway, we all know what's under the respective hoods.

Thanks, Guy. I was prepared for the flame, so it's nice to get a pleasant comment out of the gate.

I remember that campaign with it originally ran. At the time the Maxima was fairly cutting edge in the Japanese sport sedan market as far as American offerings. It made me want one. I bought (and still have) a 4th gen.

Nostalgic.

I like that decal, not something that screams at you. Are you selling them?

No, I'm just the designer. But thanks for the compliment.

My friend, Ed, has been selling the decals at a really reasonable cost for a few years now: $1/each with a total of $1 shipping. (i.e., 4 decals would be $5 total.) He's got a variety of colors, for both inside and outside application. In my opinion, inside-window looks fantastic... if you don't have tint.

I could see about getting him over here on myG37.com. I know his wife has a G37x Sedan... he might be here already.

I got one of these maximas man, and I have driven the Gsedan. I have no complaints on my max except that there are almost no aftermarket parts for it and that its FWD, but for being FWD it is a beast.

And it turns heads.

In the world of FWD sport sedans, the Maxima is King in both design and value... no argument from me. If they had a proper transmission, I'd probably have bought one back in 2009. But that CVT is not what most auto enthusiasts would want in a car. And the interior is kind of fat, IMO.

None of which is relevant to the topic of 4DSC decals. I don't mean to take things OT.

I had a similar experience. I was driving my bachelor’s 280ZX (2 seater, 5 speed manual) when I got married. I loved that car but after a few kids I knew I had to give it up for a sedan. That’s when Maxima’s 4DSC campaign came out, and it was just what I wanted to hear. I remember the TV commercial saying something like, “I had this dream where I was driving a sports car, but wait......it had four doors….”. So I bought a ’91 Maxima SE and happily drove it for ten years.

How do you think I came to get a G? My past two cars were Maximas. Loved them. Wrecked one, had to sell the other. Wish I still had it, what a great car.

I’m amazed that you came up with that. Thanks, it’s great seeing it again.

It seems about a third of Maxima owners move into a G.
Another third head over to BMW.
And another third get another Maxima.

The other 10%? I don't know those people.
