Next time you get to the highway, reset one of the two MPG averages (my non-GPS Journey has one on the dash console, another on the center display) and see how it measures when actually on the highway. Check it as you're exiting after a 20+ mile run. I'm sure it'll be a lot better.

After 5k miles you should be getting better MPG with the break-in.

I'm getting 18.5 overall average, that's 80% city 20% highway. Upper 20's on the highway.

The best mileage I ever squeezed out of my 09 xS sedan (with 5700 miles on it) was 26.4 mpg. I'm mostly in the 16 to17 range around town and I find it pretty hard not to enjoy the higher speeds when out on an open highway. My goal was not great mileage when I bought the car

I have owned quite a few vehicles, including 2 diesel motor homes and every forum I have been on has posts that say your fuel mileage will get better as the vehicle breaks in. I have never personally experienced this. One thing I do is try and put several hundred or so break-in miles on the new vehicle before my first extended highway trip. It's possible if I took a new vehicle immediately on a long trip it would not get as good a mileage as the following trips. I only check for highway mileage, since there are so many variables as far as city mileage, especially which city you live in and how the same route depending on congestion, construction, red lights, etc can result in quite a bit of difference in fuel mileage.

It is, but one of the great things about driving a G is that there are so few who can actually accelerate fast enough to cut us off if we have to slingshot them in the middle or right lane.

It was definitely true of my last two vehicles, Subaru Legacy GT Limiteds. Got around 23mpg when new, combined driving. By about 12K, they both were at about 26. The G is just over 10K, and I'm not seeing any improvement, but 23mpg for this size/weight/power ain't bad. And I put my foot in it quite a bit. My commute is about 70% interstate, 20% country secondary, 10% town.

So true, in Dallas most of the N, S, E and W roads are three lanes in each direction with decently timed traffic lights and 40-45 MPH speed limits that it's close to being on a highway. That's how I can drive spirited and still average 18+ MPG.

What's that? I don't plan on beating the crap out of mine when I get it, but I won't be babying it either. A few revs up to 5/6K rpm once in a while during the early miles shouldn't hurt anything once the engine is fully warmed up.

Strange I just hit 1,000 miles on my G last week and have been averaging 22 MPG in the city, just driving to work which is about 11 miles each way. Can't wait to go on a road trip....

These cars do get pretty good MPG on the highway. I got just over 27mpg on a trip from LA to Vegas which averaged 80-85mph. I also found out that the cruise control won't engage over 90mph. :P City MPG is a whole other story.

I've gotten 28 m.p.g. from our X over a ten hour road trip. That's with the wife and child in the car so full-on family sedan mode was engaged.

This is the first car I have had where the mileage increased significantly after 1500 miles. Be patient. The mileage does increase quite a bit the slower you go on the highway. If I am on a two lane and set cruise at 65 I can get 30mpg but if I jack it up to 80 on the interstate mileage drops fast to 24mpg.
