Thinking about purchasing the Infiniti Elite Protection Plan

I purchased a 2010 G37xS in August and I just turned 19,000 miles on the odometer. It has the premium and navigation packages. It was purchased out of state and is not certified, but is covered by the original warranty until August 2014 or 60,000 miles.

I'm looking for your opinions and input on my planned purchase of the Infiniti Elite Protection Plan. Based on the literature and my conversations with my local dealer (Circle Infiniti, West Long Branch, NJ), it is my understanding that I can purchase this warranty up to the time my odometer hits 20,000 miles. So now is the time, if I want to do this. I have the following 2 choices:

6 years / 82,000 additional miles
7 years / 100,000 additional miles

I am leaning strongly to the 7 years / 100,000 additional miles choice. The clock on both the time and miles would begin at the time I purchase the plan. The warranty is essentially a continuation of the original factory warranty, which would give me and additional 4 years and 59,000 miles beyond the expiration of the original warranty, ending in 2018 or at 119,000 miles. I have a tendency to to keep my vehicles for a long time and it is likely I will still own the car when the warranty finnally expires.

I have the following thoughts and questions, on which I would appreciate any input you might have:

1) Many sources suggest that I not buy this warranty since the G37's are known for their reliability. Buying the warranty may be a bad bet, but it will help me sleep better at night. Also, there are many gadgets in this car, it is very high tech and would not be cheap to fix. It wouldn't take too many visits to the dealer to reach $1637.

2) Are these prices reasonable and customary? Are they negotiable? Might I get the same warranty cheaper at another dealer? (It should be noted that I got the same price from a second dealer.) If you purchased this warranty, how much did you pay?

3) Has your G ever needed repair? What went wrong? How much did it cost to fix?

4} Do you have this warranty? Have you used it? What are your thoughts on it?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I bought the elite maintenance package for my new G37x. I did my research and compared the cost for all the maintenance - oil changes, routine maintenance and the discount for purchasing the elite package was a much better buy then doing the maintenance as I went along. It also gives me piece of mind.

G37x, Slate Blue, Graphite, Premium, Nav, Rear Spoiler ill kick plates, all weather mats- Bought on October 4th, 2011. I gues you could call the rear spoiler my first mod!

A warranty is like insurance. You never need it, until you do.

If you use it, it will be worth every penny. If you don't, it's obviously a waste. Look at it this way though. They won't just give you anything, they're out to make money. They have the statistics and whatever you pay for the plan, is a little more than the average vehicle repair cost is for that same time period/mileage. Overall, they make money off of plans like this. You might come out ahead with it, but there's 5 guys behind you who don't. Which guy are you?

Isn't the elite protection a warranty extension by x miles or y years (which ever comes first). What you're referring to above sounds like a maintenance plan. A maintenance plan is not an extended warranty.

Its basically a three year extension of the basic warranty. If you plan to keep the car for seven years and plan to drive it 120,000 miles, it might be a good program for you...especially if you can not afford the financial risk of a large unexpected repair. I just did the same thing for my wife's 2011 Toyota Highlander...$1,000 for seven years an 75,000 miles.

I just got my car in July and got the same plan. The $1637 sounds about right. I think that's what I paid as well.

I've owned quite a few vehicles and never buy the extended warranty.
One of the important things to check on an extended warranty is exactly what is covered. A lot of the stuff that might fail is usually not covered in the extended warranty.
On most of the better cars it is fairly rare to have an engine/transmission or rear end fail. If one of these items were prone to failure it will almost always happen within the original warranty period of 60,000 miles.

^^True, but these cars do have an awful lot of electronics... Question is will a potential failure(s) offset the cost of the warranty...

The thing is that the certified WRAP is what covers the electrical components. Not the elite protection program. I don't think the electrical components are covered after 60,000 miles or 48 months.
