My daily commute is 95 miles round trip.

Computer says 21.8 mpg over the last ~10 tanks.

You spend over $18/day commuting. Probably not a bad time to consider the BART. That's what I like about Chicago. It's got great commuter trains whether you live in the suburbs or the city.

110 miles for me, into downtown Chicago. I come out of NW Indiana, and the train there isn't much of an option, as I am already half way to work by the time I get near the station. 5 gallons of gas, $7 a day for the Skyway now and another couple of bucks for the Indiana toll-road. I wish I could find a job closer that paid anywhere near as much.

...or move closer. I think it's probably even cheaper (after gas, toll and depreciation) to get a second apartment (or a cheap hotel) for the 4 nights.

Except there's no BART in the South Bay. CalTrain is an option, but the door-to-door trip would actually be longer than I can usually drive...even with traffic.

Well yeah. I'm well aware that when it says Empty, it's not actually empty, there's some left, in addition to the 1 - 2 gallon reserve.
I never said I fill up for $80, its usually $60-$70.
I was just making a point that some cars with half the tank capacity, would have a bigger range. It's not news to anyone, I know, but still driving both on a regular basis, I though I'd share.

Yeah, I dunno, I don't use public transportation in San Jose. I think the point is that you can get to work by paying less money, contributing to less pollution, not adding wear&tear to your car, experiencing less stress, and being able to do work/watch movie while commuting to work.

The fact that your commute would actually be about the same is not too bad. In Chicago, a lot of people in the suburbs would actually endure a slightly longer trip for the convenience.

I've never been south of 35th. I do know that in the North Suburbs, there is great commuter service.

I don't do public transportation down here in Miami. Too many weirdos, Drunks, Ignorant teens, and the sevice is always running behind schedule. I hate depending on someone else to get me where I have to go because they don't have the same sense of urgency that I would have trying to get to and from work.

It's all a matter of perspective. I live in the country, away from people. There are only 6 houses on my mile long "block". My wife has horses.

Luckily I enjoy driving. Even more so with the G! Of course the plethora of idiot drivers in this country can be frustrating at times.
