6MT vs Journey

Does anyone know why the 6MT gets worse MPG than Journey?
Usually, MT have better MPG than AT, correct?

driving aggressively has nothing to do with it, since the same testing procedure is used for both cars. the slight difference is probably due to the 7 gears vs 6 gears. manuals have typically gotten better mileage because, up until very recently, they had more gears than autos. go back 10 years and even a 4spd auto was fancy! more gears means the engine spends more time at the optimum RPM range and doesn't have to work as hard..

AT's now have lock up torque converters that avoid the continuous slip losses from the old days. The 7AT is also slightly faster than the MT accelerating from a standing stop. But If I had to do it again, I would buy the 6MT. Driven gently (i.e. my wife) the 7AT is great, but driven more agressively (i.e. me) the 7AT is shifting is somewhat inconsistant and response to the paddle shifters are not fast enough for my taste. I miss shifting for myself.

I thought it was faster also, but after driving one and also runnin them from a 5mph+ roll it looks like the 6mt is quicker. Maybe just car to car difference tho.

G37 ATs have higher mpg at highway because of taller gears (lower RPM) than MT6. If gear ratios were the same in AT & MT, the MT would have higher mpg. Many manufacturers emphasize performance & acceleration with MTs, which is the reason for the gear choices.

Nevertheless, in city driving, despite higher EPA mpg in the AT, the MT6 will do better if the driver is experienced and is dedicated to optimizing fuel efficiency. Many who drive a G37 don't care about fuel efficiency. However, many of us pride ourselves on obtaining as high mpg as practical. I like the power & acceleration of my MT6, but I use it only when I need it. The rest of the time I am shifting, coasting in neutral, etc. for maximum mpg. The manual transmission allows complete control of the transmission/engine interaction, which is key to this type of driving, and the LCD mpg gives moment to moment feedback.

I currently average 22 mpg around town, 26 on the road, although I don't have the city stop and go driving at a crawl that drivers in NYC, etc. experience. I have a light or stop sign here and there, but generally traffic moves at a good rate. There is no way for me to improve on highway mpg without slowing down since the gear ratio in 6th gear is the limiting factor. I wish the car had a taller overdrive gear, which could easily have been done with 6 gears. Nevertheless, I am definitely a happy camper with my G37 sedan.

The auto does get better gas mileage due to the taller gearing and you'll get even crappier mileage with the stick because it is impossible to drive without getting into it. I have the 6MT, avg. around 18 city, and could care less what the mileage is, wouldn't trade it for anything, most fun car I've ever owned, period.
