i personally look at time over mileage. I watch all these people who live in NYC -- floor their cars from every red light to red light... and only drive about 15 miles total per day, but the car and engine have been on for 5 hours b/c you're making millions of stops....

this is why I'd wouldn't care about buying a low mileage car preowned --

I think he's trying to say that even a low-mileage car could have led a hard life, much more so than you would think by the miles indicated on the odometer. That's why people love to say that their mileage is mostly "highway" miles when they are selling their cars.

This is true. I didn't drive my G for 6 months and when I tried to start it after that time, I found that the acid had eaten my entire engine and it was gone!

Another article I've quoted in the past notes that many folks think that the occasional run to the store somehow disqualifies them from the normal (non-severe) schedule even though the majority of their driving fits it.

Thanks Shadowman, that's very good article.

I have gone almost 6 months with less than 3.5k miles for my last oil change. Since I don't drive much, it would be waste of money for me to go every 3 months. In my case, I would follow mileage.

My concern is that schedule 1 vs. schedule 2 is what Infiniti says it is. If there are engine problems following schedule 2, and Infiniti says schedule 1 should have been followed, then they may refuse coverage.

How is Infiniti going to determine which schedule a driver should have been following?

My concern is with keeping my engine running well. I've been changing my oil between 6K and 7.5K, and getting UOAs on the oil to see how it is holding up.

Let's just say I've seen the best of people taking care of their vehicles and I've seen some vehicles that the oil comes out looking like hershey syrup with tons of sludge.

I've seen tons of cars that are just trailered to the track... so let's say I have a car and only use it for the 1/4 mile but go down the track 400 times...thats only 100 miles added onto the car...

a lot of abuse but it's still a low mileage car right?

should I wait 7500 miles to do an oil change then?

I think it's because I'm **** about things --- you should've seen me when I had to go house hunting for my first home... looked at 28 different houses and when I found the one to buy -- i did 3 home inspections. You just can never be too careful.

So... if you don't reach the 3,750 miles, then don't go over 6 months without an oil change

If anyone is that concerned about intervals, get your oil tested by Blackstone Labs.

An oil analysis by them will tell you all you need, and more.
