New 2010 G37 - some observations

hi everyone,

I'm new to the forums, this is actually my first time seeing them even. I found the forums by accident when googling some issues im having with my brand new 2010 g37 so im hoping I can get some advice here from those more experienced with the car.

Basically I live in the UAE and I just bought a new 2010 g37. Here's what I've noticed so far which has me a little concerned. I'll do it in points to make it easy for people to respond:

1. A/C seems to make a strange noise. Almost like a high pitched whine. It comes and goes but if I turn off the AC the car is dead silent on the inside. It's only when switching it on that I get the intermittent whine combined with the normal A/C air noise.

2. When accelerating the car sounds somewhat like a truck, it's got a low'ish grunt noise that you'd expect from, well im not sure but something less refined? Is this the normal G37 sound? Unfortunately i took the car for a test drive over a year before I bought one so I dont remember if the test car made the same acceleration sound.

3. The gear shifts seem to be incredibly jumpy, both on upshifting and downshifting. It feels like it should be much smoother than it is. I'm putting it down to breaking in but the car already has 1500 miles on it so it should in theory be broken in by now. Is this usual with g37's transmission? In the higher gear, at higher revs and high speed the gear shifts are almost seemless. But other than that, they are jerky especially when coming to a stop, the car seems to almost jump to a stop.

4. The engine oil read out seems to increase rapidly, im not sure what it means but it's at 1815/5000 after 1000km from the first service. (Currently 2300 kms total - first service done at 1000km). Is it just me or does this car burn oil fast?

5. the speedometre pointer (the thing that points at the speed you're going) tends to shake a bit sometimes when accelerating. Almost as if it's not a smooth acceleration. In lower gears, the acceleration sometimes feels like its struggling almost. Like it's running out of fuel but if i apply more gas it tends to be fine. I dont really know how to explain this one but its almost like it just should be smoother on acceleration at lower gears and the power band should be more uniform. I'm not sure why the pointer shakes but its visible if you have an eye for detail like me.

That's about it for now.

as you can probably tell i dont know a whole lot about cars and i certainly dont know how to do diagnostics or anything like that. I've just driven many cars in my life and i know when something doesnt feel right but then ive never had a nissan or an infiniti so im not sure if this is normal for these cars?

Thank you very much for your help

p.s. forgot to mention, it's an automatic. I use the paddle shifters to shift when not in D

First off, Welcome to the forums.

Take it to the dealer and have them check it out. They have the tools and diagnostic equipment to do so. Our guesses would just be... well, guesses.

1. AC whine noise is not normal. Take that in and have them look at it.

2. The engine noise is normal. The G is not a quiet reving car.

3. The 7AT is a little jerky at times, especially in traffic. I don't know if you would consider that normal, but that is the consensus of the 7AT here.

4. I have not experienced an oil consumption issue. I had 1 oil change so far and I'm at 4000 miles. So far, oil level is normal.

5. I've noticed the speedo needle being a little shakey at hard acceleration. It seems almost like it's digital and not a real needle moving in a smooth manner. I think that's just how it is. It doesn't really bother.

I have put 6,500 on my 2010 sedan and haven't noticed any of the problems that you describe.
When I accelerate rapidly I don't look at the speedometer, until I either start slowing or level off, so it's possible that my needle doesn't move smoothly either. I will check that out tomorrow.
I don't understand question No.4. I don't have an oil readout.
I took a long trip shortly after buying the car, so my first oil change wasn't until I had almost 6,000 miles on the car. The oil was still close to the full mark on the dipstick.

Me Too.... No.3 7 speed Auto tranny - I guess you could call it "normal", but it Jerky and especially in traffic 35-20 mph stop n go. There are a numbeof posta and threads - check them out. We are ALL waiting for a TSB to reflash the ECU and/or Drivetrain - but as the Dealers will tell: It Is What It Is... The other items - I have not experienced any of those things. All in all, other than this jerky tranny shifts {too much gear hunting], the car is terrific, not a squeak, rattle or roll...

#4 is for the reminder to change your oil. It is set for 5000KM, and you have 1815KM driven so far. When you get to 5K it will give you a message and it is time to change your oil. You can set the 5K to whatever number you like, so after the first oil change you can move it up if you want to go longer intervals.

oh ok I understand. Thanks for that and thanks to everyone for the replies. I love how resourceful this place is!

I've encountered another new issue though and this one is really worrying:

6. Sometimes I'll shift a gear and the display changes to indicate the gear its in but the shift itself happens 1-3 seconds later. This is most notable when downshifting. For example, yesterday I was in 2nd gear and i downshifted to 1st (at 40kph) to do some engine braking, only nothing happened...then a few seconds later the engined revved wildly and it was back in 1st gear.

I've noticed this happening a few times now.

7. the car seems to be developing rattles but from where I can't really pinpoint. It seems like it's coming from the dash and sometimes it feels like its coming from the rear. I tried testing the seats, seatbelts, and other things to check if anything was lose but everything seemed to be fine.

I have no rattles at all, with my 2010 non-sport sedan, after 6,600 miles.
I thought that the owner's with rattle complaints would be the ones with S models, with the stiffer suspension and 18" or larger diameter wheels.
I would be pretty upset if my car developed a rattle that the dealership couldn't eliminate.

i have a non S but with 18s. i have that annoying rattle in the rear shelf by the bose speaker. got a little creak by the driver side window. and occasionally, over rough roads, i have a slight rattle somewhere in the dash area, near the glove compartment. i tried taking everything out of it and it still there. my headliner creaking by the sunroof was fixed by the dealer though.

I have 7000 miles on my 2010S and it is rattle free. My '05 G sedan was very rattly and creaky, mainly due to the cheap plastic on the dash and console. The newer material is more flexible and virtually creak free thank goodness. My main concern now is the black paint. So far it's held up well after 4 months but I keep hearing rumblings of cheap, soft paint that Infiniti uses and I want it to stay looking good for at least 3 more years.

Yes I can testify to the poor quality of the paint - already got a 2 inch paint chip on the side door skirt. and a few at the front probably from small road chippings.

I'm not impressed so far, this was my first venture into japanese cars and I thought nissan was top notch until actually owning one now. I'm not picky at all but honestly for a $47,000 car (which is what it cost me over here) it's not up to scratch. I'd hand it back to the dealer if i could.
