I get a lot of spin off the line - takes a second or two for the car to hook-up - 60's are at 2.42, so I need to figure a what to get better hookup - 18 w the 245s, I guess? It really seems like wheelspin is my culprit in not getting below 5.5 0-60....how to avoid?

 

I'm in Fla right now but going back up north at the end of April. My house there is about 2 miles from the Pocono Raceway and there is a driving/racing school nearby. I'm thinking of taking some lessons in my own G so that I get the feel of what it can do; after all I'm 82 and haven't ever had this kind of car before! What do you all think of this idea (no snide remarks, I get enough from my family)

I think the 0-60 times on the X are comparable to the times that the magazines quote for the RWD S models due to traction advantages of the AWD. However, in the quarter mile, I believe that the RWD will run away from the X.

Definitely go to a test & tune when the weather gets decent (low humidity and cooler temperate), usually can get quite a few runs in if you're quick to get back in line. Not too much to know about drag racing, just make sure your car is in good running condition (e.g. safe) and not leaking any fluids. They will do a tech check on the car to make sure you aren't going to leak anything on the track, but it's your responsibility to make sure your brakes and tires are up to the task. Make sure you're fluids are all topped off and oil is full. I usually bring a spare quart in case it decides to use some.

With our cars a helmet will be required if you break 13.99, which is certainly possible with the G. See here for specs: Frequently Asked NHRA Tech Questions or call the track. Not sure what happens if you don't run with a helmet and the car breaks into the 13s, they might ask you to get one or leave.

I've only been to Mason Dixon and liked the track, but whatever is closer for you. 75-80 is used by Motorweek to test their cars, it's been around for a long time and was recently re-furbished.

Playing around with tire pressure is also key to getting a good 60' time off the line, which has an overall effect on your 1/4 mile times. With my Altima (FWD) I found that lowering the tire pressure down to around 20psi gave me the best combination of off-the-line traction and good top end power. If you go too low you will start sacrificing your trap speed on the top end.

The key is to play around a little bit with the combinations during a test & tune and have fun! BTW, try to run with less than 1/2 tank for weight savings ;-)

 

Your car a auto or stick? Have you tried lowering the tire pressure down in 5psi increments to see if it helps your traction. I did this with my 6spd Altima (245/45/18) and pulled off a 2.1 60', which wasn't too bad for street tires and my launching abilities.

i have a G37x with G37 coupe 19's.

A 5.3 0-60 is damn good still, could be the extra rolling mass from the 19s. I'm still on the OE 17s for now.

 

Can't powerbrake above 1800 rpm, I think - there's a fuel cutoff at that point. I'd sure like to get that tuned out of my card. Wish somebody would break the code and release comprehensive software like HP tuners for this car. And it's transmission. I can't believe the tuner shops haven't been able to tune the tranny, it's killing me.

 

I'm AT. I'm better at launching an MT - drove those for 20 years. Yeah, I'm getting like 2.44 60's with awful wheel spin. Launching these cars well is really difficult. I feel strongly that learning the proper launch technique could shave .3 to .4 secs of my time. And better, fatter tires. I need the sport 18's with the 245s and some good all-season performance tires like Goodyear GTs or pilot sports - something that will hook up.

Plus, on top of all this, the new base, v-6 mustang is putting out 5.1 0-60s and 13.7 1.4s. What the hell? I can't let some little high school girl in her 2011 V6 Mustang outrace me!! lol, I got to get my time down. Actually I fond that pretty funny. Infiniti's 40k luxo-sport coupe is gioing to get killed on a regular basis by 22-23k base Mustangs because Infiniti couldn't come up with some decent torque. 20 more ft lbs would have made a huge difference, I think.
