Go to autotrader.com search for an old car for under 1k, buy that, go to you dealer and get the 3500-4500 for you new clunker. Use that to get your new G

If this works, then this is a hole that needs to be filled, hopefully before your purchase.

Registered and insured for a minimum of a year to qualify and be newer than a 1984.

So if you have been driving a $3,500 clunker for over a year can you AFFORD a new car? And if it's worth $3,500 bux why not just sell it? If it's worth $1,500 on the street you are only getting $2K-$3K off of your purchase.

Personally, I think the program blows, but it may be good for the REPO biz when all these new found clunker drivers lose their new car after missing the first few months of payments...

Did anybody stop and think for a minute why these peeps are driving clunkers in the first place?

 

Form a special interest group to push for my program above. That way
1) You get the clunkers being bought and states earning sales tax on that sale (DMV gets some of the action too)
2) The seller gets the much needed cash that he can use to buy food etc which will boost consumer spending
3) Those who can afford can then buy the new cars and sales tax, dealer commissions etc earned on the transactions faster than the program we have now.

My approach gets the clunker recycled faster and the economy gets a bigger boost than the one we have now.

In short, I agree, the program we have now is stupid

 

Parents had a old bronco and traded it last weeked... they let me negotiate there terms and they ended up with a 38,xxx loaded out van to travel in for 23k.

I think the Cash for Clunkers is great... well at least for my parents it was!!

 

Glad it worked out and may they drive this one into the next future clunker status as well

 

they have another older ford truck that qualifies as well... ima try to swindle this one

My son has a 1996 Lincoln Town car that was a hand-me-down and as tempting as it may be to trade it in it only has 40k miles and runs like a top with no leakage. We'll wait for the Clunker sequel in a couple years

 

Hmmm, maybe it's possible that a college grad has been driving a clunker since high school, since he doesn't have rich parents. He did good and landed a great job. A year to two later, he's making enough to buy a new house and a new car and still afford his school loan payments. He wants a G. He roles in and trades in his clunker and leaves in a G!

Also, some people do believe in keeping a car til the wheels fall off even if they can afford a nicer car. Broke people aren't the only people who drive clunkers!

 

Looks like A LOT of people thought this program was good. They suspended it as of midnight last night due to an excessive backlog of unprocessed applications by dealers. The backlog is estimated to exceed the $1 billion allocated for the program.

I'm sure our fine gov't will find a way to add another couple of billion of taxpayer money to extend it but clearly there is some serious pent up demand for cars when the economy comes out of the crapper....unless many of these people who had clunkers default on their new loans (there was a reason A LOT of these people -> not all <- were driving clunkers) and further send the credit markets down the tubes.

I sure am glad I work my @ss off to be able to have nice stuff...too bad none of this stimulus gets to come my way. I just get to help pay for it all. Does anyone detect my bitterness?
