Cash for clunkers
I'm not bitching about not being poor....anybody can end up that way under certain circumstances including me, you or anyone else. Thankfully I'm not there yet.
This isn't the forum for politics so I'll shut up now.....

Registered and insured for a minimum of a year to qualify and be newer than a 1984.
So if you have been driving a $3,500 clunker for over a year can you AFFORD a new car? And if it's worth $3,500 bux why not just sell it? If it's worth $1,500 on the street you are only getting $2K-$3K off of your purchase.
Personally, I think the program blows, but it may be good for the REPO biz when all these new found clunker drivers lose their new car after missing the first few months of payments...
Did anybody stop and think for a minute why these peeps are driving clunkers in the first place?

The funny thing is that all the interview on TV news, they were asked "If it were not for this program, would you have get a new car?". They all ans, "No, cause I wouldn't be able to afford it!". Huh? Really? For a 3-5K discount, now you all of a sudden can afford a 25K car?
Just seems nutty to me, and all of these clunkers can't be worth "0" to begin with. So, once again if you can sell the beater on the street for $1,500 you aren't getting a $3,500-$4,500 gift from the government. Oh well, at least it's good to see people buying shit rather than the opposite and as a bonus of this my Ford stock is rocketing higher. I guess we all win
While there will be people who have been sitting on older cars that got less than 18 mpg combined rating, they probably did so because they drove very little and it was economically feasible to hang on to it.
They probably only had liability insurance, not full coverage.
In essence this program is a motivator to get into debt. Some people may be able to afford it, but many won't. It all depends on why they had the old clunker and were still using it.
I would venture to guess most did so because they could not afford a new car. They will soon find themselves strapped with debt and realizing that the $4500 did not help them.
The cars that get turned in must be scrapped, so how many of them must be so worthless as to be destroyed? Who do you think ends up footing the bill for the lost value?
If the car is of so little value, had to be insured and driven, and got less than 18 mpg combined, then the owner surely has the income to make new payments and cover higher cost insurance... right? right.
