A good set of soft compund winter tires will achieve both.

I use Blizzaks and swear by them, but there are others.

Nontheless, slower is always better on ice and snow.
Absolutely no sudden maneuvers on ice.
Every move slow and deliberate, even if you drop a wheel off the road.
You eeeez it..... back on.

Going too fast is the major cause of all accidents on ice.
Even with all AWD or 4WD, one should always remember you can't stop any faster than anyone else.
Big mistake made by too many to count.
Agreed!! I would assume that the OP doesn't live where it regularly snows 4+ inches, otherwise he would have answered his own question. Nor does he live in Florida, same thing. Accelerating in bad weather is only 1/3 of the equation, the other 2/3 (cornering/stopping) need not be ignored just because "I didn't include it in my post". I suspect the OP probably lives somewhere that includes some wintry conditions. In my locale, I never felt any more secure with AWD due to the fact that turning and stopping were dicey. Yes, an AWD will be able to accelerate better, but that's part of the reason we see them off the road frequently, they can't stop or turn any better. That's why I use summer tires for summer, winter tires for winter, you get the best traction no matter what the season, RWD or AWD, you just have to drive smart. The main question is, what do you drive in most?? Dry roads, or cold sleet/snow covered roads, this will answer your question.

Having come from the RL, the SH-AWD was actually designed for improvements in DRY weather performance, and yes it does make a 4000lb car do incredible things by torque vectoring at the outside rear wheel while accelerating through a turn, but the RWD G does it better in all circumstances, except for accelerating in snow. But I don't want to accelerate in snow anyway, I just want to get going, and keep the car on the road. I had some scary moments with the RL in the snow, probably because I got the car going so easily.

Unfortunately, this thread has turned into an arguement about RWD/AWD. They are both good systems, it will boil down to driving circumstances and preferences.
