Just try to buy a F430 at MSRP.... or even a Ford GT at MSRP.... not going to happen.

I went out with a friend test driving cars, we drove the new Eclipse, it had a $3000 market adjustment. There was a thread on my350z where the new Civic Si had a $15k market adjustment on a $20k car. The first time I went out to see the Evo it had a $20k market adjustment. The reality is that when there's a new model, you may have a hard time buying it at MSRP let alone getting anything under. Just wait a year or two.

I don't know about where you guys live....but when the 350z first came out they were selling them for like $10k above MSRP at Universal City Nissan.

I was ready to spit in the face of one of the car salesman when I looked at a base model 350z, that didn't even have leather.....that they were trying to sell for $40k.

Kuz, how long have you been of car buying age?

My earliest memory of this practice was me, fresh out of college, new car shopping in the 1980s, and finding dealers boldly marking up the all-new 2nd gen Honda Prelude Si and Toyota Celica GTS for as much as $2500 over MSRP ... with people lined up to outbid each other for them. I often saw them sell cars right out from under people while they were signing papers (one of them being my best friend), just because someone else offered more back out on the floor!

They were even so bold as to have a dealer-printed markup sticker next to the factory sticker labeled "ADMV" which meant "Adjusted Dealer Market Valuation," or some crap like that, which had their new bottom-line price clearly highlighted in bold. They wouldn't even talk to you for less than that number, let alone about a discount.

(Doesn't mean you couldn't find discounts, but you did have to go much farther and work much harder to get those deals.)

This is nothing new, and when demand is high enough, it still happens. Simple law of supply vs. demand.

Given how hot the 2003 G Coupe was when it debuted, we were lucky to get away with "only" MSRP at most dealers. And that was probably only because Infiniti strongly discouraged markups by their dealerships. And let's not even talk about what jerks most Z dealers turned into. But that's what happens when people no longer have to "work" to sell a car.

Oh, how short our memories have become.
