Nobody is really going to know unless they've been in an accident with one! Also, airbags are carefully designed to deploy through the cover and would you really want to chance that in an accident?
No I don’t, lol, I was assuming they’d be unsafe to use, I’ve never seen it but my hope was that it deploys by folding rather than tearing out the center 🤷🏻♂️. That was just wishful thinking though. But they look so good, 😢
OEM airbag "covers" have relief cuts built into the cover itself. When the bag is deployed, these relief cuts give way allowing the bag to inflate with minimal obstruction:
I know the rage in Japan now is the Tommy Kaira leather airbag cover. I am skeptical of any cover used over the airbag- even the dashboard. While the force of the deploying airbag would likely rip through (or rip entirely off), having met a airbag once I would not take that risk.
How about the side airbags? I wanted to get the headliner reupholstered with black or dark gray suede or swap everything from a q60. I can’t stand the ugly white tan headliner
You may want to go through this thread where member sobeIPL redid his entire interior in black leather.
As for the curtain, pillar, and seat airbags, those are designed to break open/away (from the occupant(s)) so covering them shouldn't be a problem given their location and design. It is the steering and dashboard airbags that are "iffy" about covering as they are designed to inflate directly out (toward the occupant(s)).
