Lost Power Steering Today

2009 G37X Coupe with 102000 miles. Was driving home from work today and all was fine until I hit the back roads in slow traffic. Noticed a little resistance in the steering at first and an ozone like smell. Got to my neighborhood and had to make several turns onto different streets and steering was very tight and made a loud buzzing sound. Got home OK and polled into my garage and popped the hood open and can smell something burning....not good. Nothing leaking on my garage floor and fluid level s OK.

Let things cool down and tried again with a loud buzzing noise when I turn the wheel so I took it to my local dealer...now waiting for the diagnosis.

Any ideas?

David

My previous 2012 G37S was making that noise for awhile while turning. Dealer told me it was over $1000.00 to replace the pump.
Decided to get rid of it for my Q70

Yup.... Got a call from the dealer. Bad pump. $1700.00 kick in the ***.

And the obligatory "You've got a very nice car and have taken great care of it. Its worth about $8000.00 in trade on a newer model...."

How intensive is this repair? Anybody tackled this themselves?

Of course but I also wanted to get other members' experiences on this. With 122k miles, who knows when mine will go.

Hey... Don't do this at the dealer.

1. Search eBay for a used G37 Power Steering Pump which can be found for around $40-80 USD. Buy one with a 30-60 day return and one with decent mileage. I used a Q50 one for my 09 G37 coupe due to low mileage on the pump, forgot what year but somehow it was the same model pump and was 100% compatible. There are plenty of pumps that came out of a junked or totaled G37 available as well.

2. Have a mechanic check your hoses for leaks (Pressure and Return for the steering). Those can be found at Rockauto.com. I used an aftermarket Return and Pressure hose set which was about $150 + shipping. You might not need these or just might need a single Pressure Hose or just a Return hose which is cheaper.

3. Negotiate a fair labor charge, per hour basis. It should be like 3 hours work. Less if it is just a Pump. I paid around $200-250. I don't recall exactly how much.

4. Save your cash.. My **** runs great with the aftermarket hoses and the replacement pump from eBay.

How many miles did you have on your car when you replaced it?

PS pump failure, mine went at 168k, replaced it with a junkyard one....which is starting to leak slowly. About to cough up the big bucks and just get a new one

Cheapest I could find it for so far (for a new OEM one):
https://www.infinitipartsonline.com/...ump-49110jk01a

I didn't know this but it appears the one above is for Sport models and this one below is for non-sport:
https://www.infinitipartsonline.com/...ump-49110jk20a

Z1 has them too:

Around 90k? Over 100k now, no problems or leaks with the aftermarket hoses or the eBay steering pump. .

I think the earlier models of the Q50 pumps might be compatible with yours too, I would consider that since the pumps are newer than the ones found in the G37 if you are looking to go the used route. Just make sure the model number is the same when you search eBay. Steering pump failures are not too common, so you shouldn't have too many issues with a used one with decent mileage.
