Is this a bad leak?

Just noticed a leak under the car, seems to be coming from this big bolt. Any idea how much it cost and what this is from? Looks like rack & pinion.

thats the tension adjustment for steering returnability and stiffness for the rack and pinion. i don't believe it can be bought separately. i have seen seepage from the adjustment on my other nissan vehicle too, but i have never had it leak to the point where it drips onto the floor.

Yeah, definitely your steering rack. Not sure what the bolt adjusts but I would manually tighten it, I can only assume it came loose.

On the Z forums I found someone who had the same issue. He said not to tighten the bolt, but to clean it off really good and use some shoe goo. He claims that he did it and 8 months later still no additional leaks. Yours may be leaking too badly, but it may be worth a shot.

Permatex may be a better solution.

do not listen to the person stating to tighten that bolt. you will affect your steering returnability and steering wheel tension when you tighten it. clean it off real good with brake cleaner. check it during your next oil change and see how bad it seeps out. to me its just normal seepage but because it has accumulated over time it looks worse than what it its.

F me right? Lol that dude's right, I had no idea Nissan would leave a vital adjustment bolt out in the open like that.. But, in other cars, you're supposed to loosen the lock nut, tighten the adjusting nut all the way, then back it out about a 1/4 inch and lock it down again. It should feel like a new steering rack to you if you've gotten use to it being leaky and loose..

So did you try the Permatex? Or, have you been able to solve the problem?
