My 2010 G37S has about 53,000 miles. Just noticed recently there is a clunking noise coming from the rear of the vehicle.

I only notice the occasional clunking noise when driving at parking lot speed. Noise doesn't happen all the time. This noise is there when driving in reverse and forward.

Vehicle is all stock. No suspension mods, no wheel/tire mod, no brake mod.

Any advice on what to check?

Check the rear differential bushing. It's liquid filled, so there would likely be an oily like residue on the differential.

Check all suspension bushings and sway bar end links.

Just checked differential unit. Dry as a bone. No leaks.

As for the suspension bushings and sway bar end links, how should I go about checking them?

What do I look for? Cracked rubber, and wiggle them to see if there is any play in them?

Over the years a few people have reported clunking coming from the rear shocks on Zs and Gs
After replacing the noise went away.

Yes, my rear shocks are original. I replaced the front last year with Tockiko blue.

It might be worth looking into replacing the rears then.

Is the car still safe to drive for a few months longer before I can get to replacing the rear shocks?

Also, is it a difficult job to replace the rear shocks? I guess I need a spring compressor.

had some clunking noise / popping noise on my G35. Turned out to be loose bolts.

First time, loose suspension bolts. They re-torqued it and fixed the noise.

2nd and 3rd time. Loose sunroof rails bolts. They re-torqued it and it was temp fixed for 3 months. 2nd time, they re-torqued it with loc-tite.

Fixed it for good.

I get a clunking sound in the driver's side rear when I get in the car after it has been sitting at least a few hours. I started getting the noise over a year ago and it appears to be a strut problem. I also noticed that the side that is clunking seems to be sitting lower to the ground. I will be installing my coilovers soon, so hopefully the noise will go away. My suspension is currently stock.

Rear shocks are extremely easy to replace. 2 bolts on top and 1 on the bottom and it comes right off. You don't even need a spring compressor as the shock and the springs do not come as one assembly.

I just checked both my rear away bar end links. Both wiggle at where the two boots are when I twist both end links. The driver side does make a slight faint squeaking sound.


Are these signs the end links are bad?

UPDATE:

It was the sway bar end links. Both were bad. Really loose at the joints of the end links. I bought the Moog parts. They were beefier than oem and much stiffer at the joints than my old one.

Took me 2 hours as all the nuts were seized. I had to spray silicone lube and let it soaked in. I also did not removed the wheels. Not sure if that would of helped.

No more clunking sound after.

Loose suspension bolts will typically cause more damage if left unrepaired. That round hole the bolt goes through will no longer be round.
