Thumbs down Steering wheel removal.. stripped torx t-30 bolt

Trying to remove the steering wheel so that I can install a custom-made carbon fiber trim piece. One bolt is standing in my way.... so I tried drilling into it to use an extractor.

But I can't get a hole started. Am I using the wrong drill bit? It's a 5/32" BRITE- Tungsten High Speed Steel 135 Quick Cut Point for "Wood, Soft Metal, Plastic, Plaster."

Or could I get a larger extractor bit to see if I can pull it out with the shallow hole that's there now?

can you file a groove across the top of the head and use a flat headed screw driver to get it out?

It's too big for a flat head I think. Also it would be hard to file with it being inside the steering wheel casing.

I had the same exact problem as you. I ended up using a bolt extractor kit from Harbor Freight. Use an extension and hammer it in to get more grip. Worked like a charm for me. Make sure you get the SAE, not metric. I think I used the 5/16 in. socket.

Awesome, thanks for the recommendation. Did you purchase online or in a store?

I bought it in store. You can also buy those torx bolts at your local dealer. They're about $0.80 cents or so.

Where did you buy the extractor sockets? Already bought new torx bolts from the dealer!

This kit works a treat.

One side is a cutter, the other is the extractor. The cutter digs quickly and you don't have to go very deep for it to be effective.
$15 bucks at HD

This is going to be a real bit@h to get out if the torx gave up-kinda hard to see a double bit extrator would work as the metal must be soft for the torx to fail. There's no shoulder for a rounded nut extrator to grap. I wonder if a soaking it with PB Blaster first would help. I think you'll have the cut a slot for a flat tip.

Ended up being able to drill a hole into the bolt and use an extractor to pull it out! Whole job took 2+ hours... but it's finally done. I've had this CF trim sitting in my closet for 6 months.

Think it looks nice

You'd be surprised. I extracted a more than one heavily threadlocked T40s with and without the bolt head.

Glad to see the OP got it sorted though.
