Exhaust Question

I got a Tanabe axleback for my coupe a few weeks ago and love it, but now I'm now looking to upgrade to a full catback system.

So I've been doing some research and I was wondering, is it possible to match up say a Fast Intentions Y-Pipe and midpipe or will I have problems combining different exhaust parts?

My main concern is that the diameter of the outlet would not match up with the Tanabe axleback. I'm not trying to increase the exhaust piping diameter (2.5"?) too much and lose back pressure.

With that said, should I aim for a complete Tanabe catback? I was interested in the FI midpipe, and y pipe (possibly resonated HFC as well) for a slightly more aggressive exhaust note.

Keeping the axle back... ok, I would go to a custom fabricator. But that is me.

You want zero back-pressure. Only speed-density systems (carburetors and Hondas, etc.) are sensitive to exhaust back-pressure issues. Cars equipped with mass-flow sensors can deal with quite well with back-pressure changes.

Now, you do want to keep all the connectors the same diameter as step changes can cause reflected waves back up the exhaust pipes which can alter cylinder evacuation.

It depends on what you want, sound or power...

As far as I can see, the Tanabe axle back gives about a 3 HP gain.

A full cat back exhaust will give you 10-15+ HP, but it may not have the sound you want.

After a little more research, I have decided to go with the Motordyne Shockwave catback with ART pipes. It has the more aggressive sound I want and the performance gains along with it ...which means the Tanabe up for sale once I get them swapped out. I appreciate all the feedback.

I went to the Motordyne site to find out more on their exhaust...
They didn't list any gains but they did list the price: $2,000!!!

I think Tanabe has the best sound out there, to each their own.

It's one of the best sounding exhausts out there next to the Tanabe imo, plus I'm looking to upgrade to a full catback anyway

I should have clarified but the test pipes from Motordyne WITH a tune nets 15 whp and 7 lb/ft torque (sedan, but same principle)
