Just a simple question...
Just a simple question...
Hello everyone, I am new here and I was wondering if you guys can help me out.
I might be a potential G37S owner soon and I just wanted to make sure there is nothing really bad with a 2008 or 2009 model?
I have done searches and just came up with the peeling interior and a couple other subtle things. That doesn't really matter to me but what does is, is there any major mechanical problems with the engine or transmission of this car?
I have been reading and everyone is saying they are reliable so I am really considering one. I am coming from a C5 Corvette pushing around 340RWHP and was wondering if these cars get up and go also.
Reason why I am selling the corvette is because I want a better daily and I absolutely love the comfort and performance of the G37S.
So if anyone wants to chime in please do so, I am all ears.

Sounds like you have already driven one so you should know what it does. Pretty bad low end, 0-60 in 5.3-5.6. 2008 was the first year, general rule is to avoid a first year. Our '08 has 78k miles, only issue ever has was BT control unti failed and needed to be replaced.
They run pretty hard, not like your C5 but definitely respectable to comparable coupes. Not many concerns regarding reliability, the clutch spring is a good upgrade for the MT, and the 7AT should get the most current reflash update. You already mentioned the S model, so be sure to single that one out, it's got many good features over the regular G37. Finding one that's clean w/ low miles shouldn't be impossible but might need to spread your search wider than expected.
G/L & welcome to the site!
Might check the cars for sale on the site in the private classified folder, some nice ones pop up regularly.

Thanks appreciate the responses, and is this car a DIY friendly car? I have a good background with GM and they're very easy to work on. Any special tools needed? I am hoping it's not like a Mercedes or BMW where you HAVE to take it to the dealership for every little things lol.
I'd recommend getting one with navigation and Bluetooth audio streaming. I'm not sure when Bluetooth audio streaming was added, but Bluetooth hands free speakerphone isn't the same thing.
If however, you're going to rip out the car stereo and replace with aftermarket, never mind.

We've got a comprehensive DIY section on the site and most of the maintenance is easy for the backyard mechanic. A fair amount of bolt-on mods that are easy to install, but don't expect to squeeze easy horsepower from these cars, that requires some coin

The only issue I can think of is the clutch slave cylinder on the 6MTs. They're known to give at some point.
Otherwise, an overall reliable car! Performance and luxury are a combination that I have come to love much more than the pure enthusiast cars!

Get the G37 Sport. Period. Regardless of the year.
Great interior and overall styling. The mechanical reliability and ease of DIY maintenance is what you would expect from a higher end Nissan/Infiniti. Parts are much less expensive than Mercedes or BMW and most things can all be handled without taking to a shop.
As far as performance, you probably won't be roasting people from a stop light. But you'll be amazed at the blend of performance and luxury... as far as daily driving is concerned, many commuters (myself included) consider the G37 the ideal choice for driving to and fro during the work week and then modding/cruising on the weekends.

I have an 08 G37 and the only thing that I needed to replace was the right catalytic converter at about 62k miles; but it was under warranty and was replaced for free. My car now has 92k miles and still runs fine. beat an S5 yesterday
. It's obviously not going to be as fast as your older car but still fun to drive.

As far as power, look at the Stillen supercharger. It's a CARB legal turnkey kit, and they offer a warranty that covers your car. Kinda takes the worry out of buying a used car. That should get you in the neighborhood of just under 400whp.
I picked up a used 08 S 6mt with 35K miles, with the intention of supercharging it. One thing is that it just doesn't hook up. You'll need a lot more tire if you start making FI power, so be sure to factor that into your budget for the power upgrades.

so far i have no issue with my 08 G37S with 72k miles on it. you can't compare the power with C5, but G has not bad power either. the S model will give you everything like new car has it. big brake, nav, leather, power seat, heater seat, back up camera, etc.
FWIW, I put down 323whp/275wtq with bolt-ons on my 08 at 70k miles. It's obviously heavier but it's fun enough to drive.
Also depends on if you get an AT or 6MT. Only mechanical issue is that the clutch slave cylinder isn't the strongest on the 6MT, but when it fails replace it with a heavy duty one(or replace if the clutch wears out first) and you'll never have an issue again.
