New G37S Project, In Need of Your Wisdom and Guidance :)

Well, I've been regularly passing by the forum as a guest for years, and I really enjoy reading through the different topics, discussions and most importantly the civility of the folks within myg37.com forums, however I refrained from signing up in fear of getting revved into modding my own ride, a '09 G37S Coupe...

However, that didn't work, lol, my car is currently in a garage getting prepped for a new paint job and a body kit installation and I need to consult your wisdom on multiple areas of which I'm not 100% certain of. So much for self-restraint from my part

Body and Color:

Unfortunately where I come from, there aren't much in terms of variety when it comes to body kits, I was lucky enough to find a JP kit (front lip + a pair of skirt diffusers) of which I think is decent and I asked the autoshop to fabricate a matching low profile rear bumper addons to keep things streamlined in conjunction with the skirt diffusers.

The paintjob was a bit of a risk though, my G37 is red and I'm thinking about something bold, call it a mid-life crisis, but I was keen on painting it orange pearl with a black top, the orange tone is still undecided and the first group of samples I received weren't convincing, I'm leaning toward a yellowish hue but I'd appreciate if you can feed me up with your opinions, other color combinations are welcomed as well.

I really loved the way VOSSEN's Orange G37 looked but opted out of the matte route. The climate in my country (Kuwait) is unforgiving and would destroy sensitive paint jobs, especially mattes.

Wheels and Suspension

Well, here is where I'm mostly lost. I honestly love the look of the stock G37S 19's and so far couldn't find affordable replacements that looked as good.

I wanted a visual overhaul for the car and thought replacing the wheels would do just that and it actually might, but then the fact that my car runs on stock sports suspensions hit me, the car won't look good with the stock height, it might even look stupid combined with the bold paint job I'm planning and then the idea of replacing the coilovers came in.

Money is a bit of an issue, I can either afford the rims or the coilovers but not both, not now anyways, I still haven't forgotten that I have a family to feed, lol.

Anyways, I'm leaning towards getting a set of coilovers but I'm torn between KW's V1, V3 and Tanabe's Sustec Pro S-0C, My driving style isn't what it used to be, definitely less aggressive, now I usually enjoy cruising around roads more than taking it to the track, I'd still do that but not as often. Any feedback on which to pick in terms of quality, adjustability would be really appreciated.

I really need the drop, but also the ability to control my height too since in some areas our roads are an extension of a war zone (figuratively speaking)

Well, this is it for now, I'll keep updating you guys on the progress of the car as we move forward (with pics too hopefully), I'm personally aiming for a two weeks frame to wrap up the build. might turn my attention to the engine bay later on

Thanks all for keeping up with my wall of text and I apologize if I couldn't keep it simpler. Thanks again

Hello. I'll formally Welcome back you to the site. Kuwait is a beautiful city! I passed through there on my way to the war zone several years ago. I remember being fascinated by the look of the rolling desert hills just outside Kuwait set against the gorgeous cityscape. Once you get the look your going for with you car completed you should get some photos taken with the pristine desert as a backdrop.

As far as wheels vs a drop.....I would say that comes down to your personal preference. I can tell you that I chose to do wheels first. A drop is coming however, but it will have to be down the line bc of the costs. I love your idea of the Orange and black paint job. Sounds like it would look stunning and sitting on some Vossens would fit right in nicely. It sounds like with your terrain issues and need to adjust your ride level you'll be forced to buy the best/most expensive coilovers...I think they run around $1500. Don't worry there will be several guys on here that can go into much greater detail on the subject that I can. Good luck with your build!

Thanks for the welcome Redfire32, yeah Kuwait is a nice little place, the roads need attention though since they deteriorate as soon as they do them due to the harsh climate.

Well, you're probably right about the quality of coilovers I need, but yeah, I'll have to be picking one soon enough if I'm to meet my dead line since I'll have to ship them in from abroad because the only coilovers i found here that fit my ride were KW V3's and that would set me back about 2700 USD :O

If you just want to close the fender gap a mild spring drop like Swift or Tanabe will work, should be manageable at that height year round and run $300 or less (here in the US), Coilovers would be best but a mild spring is a viable option IMO.

Welcome to the forums!!

To answer your question about the wheels or suspension, I'd personally choose a set of coilovers over the wheels. You can always get your stock wheels powder coated to a different color of preference-maybe black to match your roof idea. Like you said, the bold color on stock height might be a bit off.

As far as what coilover to go with, I've heard of many positive results on KW's. Tanabe is a cheaper/more affordable coil, however it can't beat the quality of the KW's. Keep in mind that if you do choose to go with coilovers, you will need a camber kit to keep your alignment within spec.

Once you go coilovers, you'll never be happy with a normal spring/shock setup...

Actually my first thought was to go spring swapping, it never is that simple when it comes to modding, eventually I was aiming higher. Somehow I know it won't stop here

Yeah, I'll probably go with Coilovers's, A friend of mine said he could sort me out with a good price for the Tanabe's, I'll see if he can source out KW's as well, any idea on how's the ride quality on the KW Variant 1? Also, any good Camber Kit you can point me to? Thanks!

@Sway_NV, lol, Yeah, I was afraid it'll come to that

Well, I can manage the price of the items, but what breaks it are the shipping charges you know, 350 to 400 USD just to get a set of Tanabe's for instance "Shipped in"?!. A local friend of mine said he could help. We'll see how it goes

Good luck w/ whatever direction you go, and like previously mentioned coilovers would be much preferred if it doesn't bust your budget.

Thanks man, after a bit of digging around the web I decided to take a chance with KW V1's given their overall reputation with coilovers.

Now I'm faced with another dilemma that is what camber kits i should go with, if any. Would i need front and rear? SPL,? SPC? And if I'm to get the camber kits, do i need any additional fittings or would the stock bolts and fittings suffice?

Thanks!

I have no input on the kws personally. However look into SPC camber kits or SPL camber kits. I've heard that SPL provides a bit more adjustability for alignment.. SPC kits are a bit cheaper. Be sure to check out our vendors for some discounts. There's a bunch of sales going on.

It's cool man, im not much of an expert when it comes to suspension, but I'll be sure to throw in my impressions if i got the KW's on incontrast with the stock setup.

Do i need a toe camber bolt too if I'm to lower the vehicle? Or would just the camber kits for the front amd rear by themselves suffice?

You can go w/ just rear camber bolts and rear toe bolts rather than the rear camber arms and then the more costly front A-arms. Here's a link for the rear bolt setup~

Nice choice w/ the KWs, should be a solid set
