Dampen Exhaust Sound

Hey all! I haven't posted in a while but I thought I would with an update on my G. I got my fast intentions cat back installed, stillen gen 3 CAI, and got an uprev tune with Seb at speciality Z (who was fantastic). Thanks to everyone here thats reviewed all three of those things and have helped with my decision. So far, I love how everything feels. I do however, feel like the exhaust is a bit too loud in the lower RPMS. This was most noticeable today on the free way, and kinda gave me a headache. I just wanted to reach and see who else has felt this way and maybe has suggestions other than going with dynamats as a solution. Dont get me wrong, I think the exhaust sounds great. It just got to me for a long trip so I'm looking for maybe a remedy for this.

I've gone down this road on my previous car. All of the Dynamat in the world will not solve this problem. What you are hearing is a deeper tone, more of a vibration/rumble, think of a subwoofer. Put a subwoofer in the closet, put a blanket over, put two blankets over it - the vibrations/rumbling (noise) will still transfer to the undesired area with minimal dampening.

I did some digging and saw you have the 18" resonators, so you have the most tame system. Your only reasonable solution may be to switch to a different exhaust if it is unbearable. You will waste money and time trying to dampen the interior of your car. Infiniti does a great job dampening the cabin from the factory. Taking off a bunch of panels to install Dynamat would also likely cause creaks and rattles throughout the cabin.

Thanks @Ryne, Just wanted to check with anyone if they had luck. Your def right in that its the deeper tone/more vibration. I will deal since I love the power gains and the general feel of my car now. Time to save for something else to drive longer distances!

Not sure if this helps but is it occurring at the 2000-3000 rpm range at slower speeds? I found that if I just downshift one gear and get the revs up just a little the drone goes away. I have Stillen cat back, Gen 3 as well as their cats on my 2014.

This wouldn't surprise me if it helped. I have also found that the noise peaks under a certain load. Although, this does force you to change how you drive, which may become annoying.

I am not sure if this is possible with the FI system, but you could always swap in a different mid pipe. Another route would be to replace the resonators in the system with ones that have better noise dampening properties. These are the best options to eliminate the issue you are having while keeping the exhaust note about where it is now.

I'm not sure what size piping you have, but here is an example. May be worthwhile to read through the reviews:

Yea, this is why many cars these days are going with active exhausts.

It's a nice feature to have it when you want it and turn it off when you don't. Who am I kidding, I'd always have it open. lol

Based on past feedback from others on this forum, if you do go a different exhaust route, I believe MXP and Invidia systems are quieter systems.

Even those may be more than he is looking for. I don't see how you can go wrong with the Infiniti Sport Accessory muffler when you are looking for a modest increase in sound levels with a good VQ note, it is what I have on my car. I am thinking about ramping it up a notch with a pair of RHFC. Kind of the best of all worlds since you free up some ponies, get a great exhaust note, have minimal cabin noise while cruising, and maintain OEM fit and finish.
