IPL Modding question

Guys,

So I am finally deciding to mod the car. I have a 2011 IPL. I spoke to Joe at JM auto racing to get an intake, test pipes, Motordyne e370 and UPREV tune modul to add some HP but he is telling me that it will not help with anything unless I upgrade the exhaust as well. He is saying that this will cause backpressure and I might even lose some horsepower. Not that I don't trust Joe but I believe the IPL is a true dual exhaust with bigger piping already so an aftermarket exhaust would not really improve anything. Please tell me if I am wrong. I cannot find anything on the piping size of the IPL. Sorry if this is a repost but I SEARCHED! I promise! LOL your guys responses are well appreciated.

Yeah it's complete junk, not worth the stainless steel it's made out of. Let me know if you want to get rid of it, I'll gladly pay scrap price for it. Seriously though, it may not flow quite as well as some aftermarket sysytems but it's good enough to free up 18 hp over the 2-1-2 systems on the base and S models.(with the IPL tune)

Thanks road. So since its already tuned would I need to retune if I put on an intake, test pipes and plenum?

I'm sure it would help to optimize your bolt ons if you got it tuned. I am not all that familiar with modding these cars. From what I understand they are pretty much optimized from the factory. If you do decide to replace your exhaust shoot me a PM because I would love to buy your stock one. I put a factory Nismo system on my wifes Z and noticed an improvement without tuning it. Good luck and do lots of research on this forum, there are some very knowledgable people here. (I don't claim to be one. LOL)

You could add high flow cats or test pipes, that would give you more power anywhere from 3 -9 hp or more with out replacing the whole exhaust, and you could replace the axle back but that might only be 1-3 hp.

Bigrez ive got a IPL Vert and have been asking some of these questions since i got it. I have added a Gen 3 Still CAI and stillen exhaust. I added the exhaust mostly because i was looking for a sound similar to my old G35 verses power. i figured it was a wash. i too am thinking of doing the intake if not Motordyne maybe the Z1 Morotsports. I understand that once i do that i might start getting some error messages that the tune would fix and maximize the add ons. Unfortunately im unhappy wiht the Stillen exhaust sound and will either put the IPL back on or get something else. I had looked at the HFCs as well. I wish i had dyno'd the IPL when i got it and then after to know for sure what the changed did. i hate to waste money but i feel certain the CAI helped and the exhaust was sound related more than power. As you make changes id love to hear how you see them since you have the IPL as well. Have you done any suspension changes like anti-sway, strut brace or coilover upgrades? Curious how that can improve.

Thank you got your honest response. I really love the sound of my ipl and I have already welded new exhaust tips on it which is why I want to keep it. I have only put eibach springs on the car and it handles very well. I am hoping with a cold air intake, test pipes, intake manifold and tune I should see some gains. Would anyone have any insight on how much hp gains would be and if it would even worth it. This issue has already been beat to death but I'm willing to spend some money to see some improvement.

I have seen on the Z1 Morotsports site a product offering 400HP (VQ37VHR 400HP Package) using a Stillen CAI and gives you headers, intake, test pipes and tune to produce 340 wheel HP. Considering the IPL is 348 at engine but not sure to the wheel (probably 300?) im betting that is about the max unless you go forced induction or something. there are way more knowledgible folks on here than me that can probably quote you the specs but based on things ive read this is my understanding. That kit costs $1348.00 plus the Stillen CAI + if you change the exhaust.

The IPL-tuned high-flow exhaust is a full dual exhaust design with independent left and right large diameter pipes. The muffler’s inner structure and materials have been maximized to reduce pressure and provide an appropriate performance exhaust note. The result is a 30% reduction in exhaust pressure versus a base G Coupe’s Y-pipe exhaust system design.

That passage was taken from a review by top speed. I don't see how a new exhuast would give anything more than minimal gains. The ipl also redlines at 7400 instead of 7000 already so an uprev tune might not help as much.
