OK this brings a question to my mind. Im like you guys not a racer but occassionally like to get up to speed faster for getting on interstate or able to get in the correct lane. What is the fastest way to do that? DS and auto, D and auto or DS and changing gears? Unfortunately/fortunately i started driving sports cars with a rotary engine so i tend to let the gears run and i sometimes find before i change the gear i get the "shut off" mode??..?? Not sure what it is really called but you loose power until you change gear or ease up on the gas peddle. It seems like it comes too quickly but then in a Mazda you get the beep but no loose of power. Also, will a tune give you more time before this happens?

at 5 psi in DS mode ... 60% in first gear, 80% in second gear and floor it in 3rd gear.

Memories..................I had a 69 Caprice Classic with a 427. It would smoke the tires if I did a neutral drop! I loved every minute of that boat.

 

I accelerate by "rolling" onto the gas. In other words I floor it a little slow so the car gets rolling before it gets full power. Otherwise, if I floor it outright, my car will get wheel spin and the computer will cut too much power.

I'm going to the drag strip this Saturday and I will experiment running the car in DS mode vs full manual control.

 

You're hitting the throttle cutoff. A tune can raise redline a bit... but I wouldn't push it. That cutoff is there to protect the engine. Plus, above 7k rpm or so we start to lose power, so there is no real advantage to increasing the readline above 8k or so.

Rotary engines rev much higher, it's just the nature of the beast.

Yep, I experimented and got some good learning from this event. I was able to get 4 runs in at Albuquerque dragway. Here is what I tried:

1st run, DS Mode, Roll onto the gas: 14.843 @ 95.246 MPH
2nd run, DS Mode, Floor it: 14.951 @ 95.096 MPH
3rd run, Manual Mode, Roll onto the gas: 15.313 @ 94.502
4th run, Manual Mode, Floor it: 15.017 @ 94.815

A few notes about these times. During my second run, I tried to roll on the gas but it ended up being closer to just flooring it so I labelled it as such. My third run was the worst. I had a great launch but I bounced off the rev limiter shifting into 2nd since it was my first attempt. That definitely killed my performance. During the 4th run, I noticed that the computer really cut my power when I floored it outright. My shifting times were better but not perfect. What I learned from all this is that its easier to just let the computer do the shifting in DS mode. Those first two runs were my fastest and I'm pretty sure its because the computer shifts at the perfect point every time. I think it would be better for me to just leave it in DS mode for all future runs and just focus on having a good launch.

Also people reading this may think that my G37 is running way to slow, however I should point out that I am running at 5000 ft elevation and about 75 degrees F temperature . For reference, my buddy brought his modified G35 coupe with 6speed manual and he was running between 16.5 and 17.8. Granted this was his first time ever drag racing and was shifting slow plus too early. He experimented a little bit with the shifting, so it was a learning experience for him as well. He also had a full tank of gas lol. My other friend brought his modified G35x (AWD) sedan which was automatic. His car was more consistent, but his best time was 15.3. He was running it exclusively in DS mode. My friend's stock 2013 Camaro SS Automatic ran between 14.7 and 15.0. He experimented with launch control and different transmission modes. I did see a new 5.0 Mustang that ran around 13.6 but I wasn't sure if it was stock/modified or manual/auto.

Anyways, I plan on returning again soon and experimenting with launches. Hopefully I can beat that 14.8 time!

So, you're saying that instantly flooring the gas pedal gives less performance and if I want the fastest times I should depress the gas pedal slowly in accordance to the engine RPM? Cause I kind of did notice a bit more pull when I did that

It's not really confusing. If I turn off the VDC and floor it, my wheels spin around and are not getting traction. With VDC on, it retards the power during slip so you don't lose control.

If you drive a manual, put it in first gear and floor it, you'll just be doing a burnout. What you have to do is test launch with as high of an RPM as possible without losing traction.

I would imagine with VDC off you could probably get slightly better times with the right driver. Although, this is a tradeoff for safety and I don't recommend it. Drive safe
