Question Drivers door wont shut tight

I have a 08 coupe. When I got it I noticed that the doors seemed to "snug" themselves shut as if there was a vacuum device at work. For the last 3 months or so, my drivers door doesn't do that anymore. It will lock and the warning light on the dash does not come on for door open. But it lacks maybe an eighth of an inch from shutting completely. I checked thoroughly for obstructions and did not find any. I know I can take it to the dealer and they will be glad to fix it for a small bank loan. I probably can't fix it myself but if I can find out what is going on, then I can take it to an independent mechanic and find out what he can do for me.

Thanks for any ideas!

In the manual there is a window reset procedure .... you need to do that. You can also search here for it ... it's probably mentioned about 10,000 times.

Sorry, miss-read your post ... thought you were referring to the window "snugging" up.

adjust the door striker

just wondering is the passenger side door closing properly? if its just your drivers door not closing flush you may need to adjust the striker. its the metal loop looking component on the body where the door latch catches and sits on when door is closed.
you would need to adjust striker inwards slightly and cinch it down. close the door and check how flush the door closes to body. if everything is flush then tighten down the screws that hold the striker.

Passenger side door is closing just fine. Thanks for the suggestion. I will look at the striker tomorrow although I may wait until Sat to work on it because it is freaking cold right now! I have my space heater running in my office. (Where's the global warming?)

I examined the striker the other day. Just looked at it again. I can't see how to adjust it unless that two piece black plastic cover comes off. Does it just pop off with a screwdriver or something with a flat blade? I don't want to break it.
Thanks!

Go to a honest body shop. It sounds like a loose hinge.
Mine needed a new hinge.

The striker is loose. Don't really want to pay the body shop a hundred bucks or more to fix a loose striker. I have just over 30k miles on the car so I would not think it needed a new hinge already. Nothing has ever happened to the car to damage it as far as I know.

However, it is possible you may have damaged the striker.
Especially if the door doesn't close correctly.
I get you not wanting to waste the $, but a small ding can run upwards of $200.00.
Or worse, your door opens while your on the freeway.
IMO get someone who knows bodywork.
If it's just an adjustment, I doubt they would charge you big $.
Also, it's not so much a mileage thing as a wear & tear item.
Is it possible the door was repaired?
Btw, my hinge was replaced because it could not hold he door open on a incline.
Nothing to do with an accident.

snug down the striker and close the door and check flushness. once you have the door flush with body open the door and final tighten the 2 screws. reinstall the plastic cover. spray some lube in the latch assembly inside the door and you are done.
