How much and where to replace muffler

So my 2008 coupe with 45000 miles have had this rattling noise for a while. I didn't notice it until friend pointed it out to me. Took to Infiniti dealer and they said baffles had come loose and quoted around $800 to replace muffler.

I just wanted to ask if one can just buy the muffler online and get it installed by third party service center or is this a thing that is complicated and has to be done by infiniti dealer itself?

Also what exactly is a Muffler? Here it costs about $700 -> Infiniti of Gwinnett Parts eStore

And here I see a listing of Mufflers that are all under $100 -> Buy Mufflers at Advance Auto Parts

So are these different products? Why the price difference?

Welcome to the forum, make sure you post an intro in the newbie section if you haven't already.

You can find a used muffler from a forum member in the private classifieds section. Many members have removed their OEM exhaust and are trying to recoup some money by selling it. I sold my muffler already, or I'd sell to you.

Those are completely different parts. The muffler for the infiniti is specific to the infiniti series. It looks like most of the mufflers you posted are for single exhaust cars; the infiniti has a sort-of dual exhaust. At any rate, the muffler has two inlets and two outlets.

If you are interested in modifying the sound your car makes, this might be a good opportunity to pick up an axle-back exhaust and upgrade! There are lots of threads with videos comparing the various manufacturers on the site, you can find them if you search.

If I were you I would replace the exhaust, especially for that price. The best part is if you get one that isn't to obnoxious it shouldn't hurt the resell value. If you want to get an idea of sound YouTube has videos of pretty much every exhaust available for these cars.

Exhaust properly refers to everything rear of the engine. That includes the headers, catalytic converters (cats), y pipe, mid pipe, and muffler. If your muffler has blown baffles, then you only need to replace the muffler itself, replacing the entire exhaust isn't strictly necessary.

One more thing. Any muffler shop can do the installation for you and they would be less expensive than a dealer. You should keep that in mind no matter which muffler you decide to install. I just had an axelback installed for $60 and it took about 20 minutes.

Replacing the muffler on this car is incredibly easy and shouldn't cost much anywhere other than at the dealership. As was mentioned, many people have replaced theirs with aftermarket models geared toward performance or sound and have a perfectly good almost new one sitting collecting dust. Depending on where you live, you may find another forum member who will sell you one dirt cheap and even put it on for you. If you're in the Houston area I may be able to do it for beer money.

i have a brand new muffler sitting in my closet. it is a new factory unit and has never been on a car. i was going to keep it around to replace the tanabes i have on the car if i ever sold it, but i don't think that's going to happen. i would sell it for a reasonable price, but the shipping may kill any deal. it weighs around 30-40 lbs. and i wouldn't have any idea how to pack it for shipping.
