Maybe buying a G37s...Convince me.

I'm potentially looking at either buying a G37s or 328i M Sport coupe. The G37s I'm looking at has around ~30k miles, priced at $30k, and is a 2011 model. The 328i M Sport I'm looking at has HIDs, red coral leather, nav, etc. priced at around $28.5k and has the same mileage. My one question is how many miles can the G37s engine take, with maintenance and non-abusive driving? How much is maintenance on the G37s? Thanks

The G37 has HIDs too, so that is not really a point of contention. I am sure you know of the reliability issues that BMWs have been known to have. I do not have data on your particular car, though. I am also sure you know that maintenance on a BMW can also be very expensive.

The G37, being a Japanese car, has less reliability issues than BMWs in general. Maintenance is fairly simple as well. I do all maintenance myself without special tools or knowledge (things like cabin filter changes, air filter changes, oil changes, etc.). However, I bet you could do most of the maintenance on a BMW too.

I do not have a high-mileage Infiniti, but I am sure others do. However, coming to a G37 forum is probably not the best way to get unbiased answers. I would not even consider getting a BMW specifically because of the reliability issues, since I like the idea of getting a car new, doing all the maintenance, and getting it to a very high mileage without any problems.

The G is rock solid (refer to Consumer Reports and numerous threads online of 140K+ cars) and the VQ37HR is beautifully designed naturally aspirated powerplant that is built to withstand up to 1000hp. Refinement overall is not at the same level as the Bimmer, but if you want an excellent handling, reliable performance car that you can hand down to your kids in 12 years, then the G is a better fit.

You're comparing a 230hp/200tq car to a 330hp/270tq car... that's a really big difference.

G37 is overall much, much nicer than a 328i. More reliable, more features if you buy a loaded one, much faster... better engine note.

go drive each vehicle and that will really help your decision. Seat time, comfortableness, driving experience is going to weight huge on you rather than just the trinkets and toys it comes with.

I agree that this is somewhat of a lazy approach to buying a 35k+ car.

I dont know how many miles can VQ engines possibly take, but at my last local car meet there was a G35 with 218K miles on it and still looks so good to me. Of course, maintenance on G will be cheaper than Bimmers.

post this exact question in a BMW forum and see you'll get the very same biased answers. I would pick infiniti over BMW in this scenario. you comparing a base model to a sports model. that in itself is your answer right there.

There is a M35 with the VQ35 engine (predecessor to the VQ37 in G37) in my service bay right now getting its oil changed. Odometer reads 197,870. Looked up the VIN in the Infiniti Service records, and not ONE repair order for anything other than maintenance items.

Bet you cant find a 328i Msport that can say the same thing.

My 2008 G37 has about 67k miles and the only problem so far was my CEL went on and the passenger catalytic converter needed to be changed but it was under warranty so replaced for free.

It really depends on how you feel about grease. If you like lots of it go with Papa Johns, if you want to bathe in it Pizza Hut is the way to go...

Wait, were we supposed to be talking about cars?
