Never know when to trust the dealership

Hello.
My dealership programmed my g37s coupe to alert me every 5000km for check up. Is that how often I should be taking my car in?
I don't know much about cars and I'm afraid they might bombard me with BS claims and destroy my bank account.
Thank you.

you can ignore that message, you have to go into settings and you can adjust that. you should at least be getting your oil changed after 5k miles!

Thanks for the quick reply. Do I need to change my oil every 5k miles?

the dealer says every 3,750 miles i think but i think u can go up to 5k with no problems, have read some people do that. obviously when you are there they might try to sell you on some things. but that is up to you to decide if those are needed then and there.

In the Oil Change pending which oil you use! I use Mobil 1 full synthetic and change mine every 5-6 k miles... oil still is Clear with Synthetic. Our cars run hot... the Synthetic takes a pounding but has never been an issue ... reg oil yes 3500 k and watch your oil... reg oil burns down faster ...

Find a good local oil shop... I found one that charges $65.00 for Synthetic, filter, and crush washer.. roughly $20-$25 lesser than the "Stealership" lol

I think I should be searching the forums for the follow up question but is there anything else that needs to be done that frequently?

I'd forget what the dealer says and read the owner's manual. See which schedule of use you more closely fit based on your driving conditions. Unless you live in the country and drive highway majority of the time, most folks qualify somewhere in between schedule 1 and 2.

Schedule 1 is 3750 miles, schedule 2 is 7K miles. I run synthetic, but don't accumulate much mileage. Probably 50/50 city/hwy. I change my oil twice a year. If I commuted in stop and go traffic daily for hours at a time, it would probably be changed out closer to 3K miles (~5K KM), even with synthetic.

This is the confusing part. I seem to qualify for schedule 2, which means I need the services every 7500 miles, but most people recommend oil changes at 5000 miles, even when using synthetic oil.

Can Schedule 2 people safely go 7500 miles on synthetic oil?

Yes you can safely go 7500 miles on synthetic oil especially if you're using the top brands of synthetic oil- Eneos, Mobil One, etc. You can find threads in the forum on oil lab tests at various intervals.

Why push it, oil is the life blood of your car .... I set the reminder for 3750 miles but don't freak out if I can't get to it right away. I never push it past 5k miles (all with synthetic). I have owed a lot of cars over the years and this procedure always leaves me with cars well over 100k miles not don't burn a drop of oil.

Don't go cheap here ....

For me, its not so much the money, but the time making extra trips in for service, and the less times the dealer or someone else can screw things up.

^ this! excellent post. never follow the dealer's "recommendations". they are in business to make profits off the service departmemt. the manufacturer owner's manual states what your vehicle requires. they designed the car and have engineers to develop service interval specifications. dealers do not.

as for myself, i change my oil 2X a year since i only put of about 6k miles a year. so for me, it is the elapsed time that triggers an oil change. mileage is one metric, but elapsed time will degrade engine oil as well.

and i do not go to the dealer for oil changes. that is a waste of time. dealers actually have decent promotions to keep oil change costs down, but they inevitably try to soak you for costly up-sells. also, the time it takes to make an appointment and drive to a dealer, wait for an hour or leave and come back is a no go for me. i bring my own parts and fluids to a trusted independent and they do it while i wait in about 15 minutes. for periodic larger services i go to the same independent who does all the same "inspections" (etc) as required by the owner's manual for a fraction of dealer costs.
