and yet i never win the lottery

I was just driving in the middle lane and i heard the guy next to me braking hard and i look over and i got hit before i could even do anything Gave my police report and gave my dad a call. i called my insurance and now im just waiting. I was wondering if anybody had damage similar to this or even worse and what was your outcome? i dont know if theyre going to repair it or claim it a total loss

I never heard if bags go in ny they consider it a total loss. I was in an accident about 4-5 years ago driving a maurano. bags went off and rear axle was jacked. they fixed it.
BTW good to see your ok.

Your B pillar doesn't look like it took a beating. Usually if the B pilar is structurally damaged the insurance companies have to claim it a total loss here in Canada.

I see the side curtain bag went off, the door is toast and a little damage on the quarter probably can be straightened. Body repair is crazy expensive these days. I cannot say for sure if it will be written off or fixed. My guess is the repairs will be well below the retail value of the car.

Glad you walked away. Keep us informed.

I really hate driving alongside other cars for this reason. When I can, I try to make sure that both my sides are clear at all times. And when I have to drive past cars on the road, I always keep one eye on them in an attempt to anticipate their next move. This saved me while I was driving in the neighborhood past a parked car that suddenly decided to get into the road without looking behind or to the sides for other cars. A close call, and only when I had about 500 miles on the car (and counting the road trip from Houston, this meant that I had only had the car for about 1 week at the most).

First I've ever heard of this airbag deploy= total loss, myself. I think the metric is damage repair that exceeds 75% of the value of the car is considered a total loss.

OP- glad you are ok and well enough to type a post. Sorry this happened to you.

I have heard about a 75% threshold too but i doubt itll be that much to repair. as of now the car is at the shop waiting on an insurance adjuster for the estimate. hopefully i can file a diminished value claim against the at fault guy's insurance. Dont know how thats gonna turn out but wont hurt to try.

He lives in nys as do I, unless the repair value exceeds 75-80% then it gets totaled.
Otherwise they will fix it.

I know I took a 15k hit & it was repaired, this was on an 08 coupe.

To the op, hope your ok.

It's not going to be totaled unless the body shop finds some structural issues on tear down.

Even then make sure the shop cares more about your car then cranking out a repair like what happens to me. Owner sees a big fat check & only cares about the job.
It should have been totaled. Found out later on I had steering column was bad along with entire rack. 8k covered by dealership, thank goodness.

That's a total of 24k I'd say it should have been totaled, but insurance companies just want to collect not pay.

Good luck with the repair, mine was worse damage including front bumper hood $ ds headlight. 3/4 nose smashed in.

Btw I'd sue that driver in small claims court, even though nys insurance companies won't pay diminished value.

This person obviously is at fault, now your car will have a accident history with DMV.

You will lose value on resale, unless you have a lease.

That sucks dude I'm sorry that happened. I know how much it sucks when you're just minding your own business and some ***hole decides to drive into the side of you. I'd have to say your chances of winning the lottery are much much lower though

Somethings you can't control and you can't do anything about it but brace yourself and hope for the best. Glad you are okay but **** happens and such is life. Car is just material objects and can always be replaced. Don't get me wrong...I luv my car but at the end of the day it's not good to be attached to material things.
Hope for the best.
I had a collision 3 weeks ago and just got back my car Monday. The right passenger rear was hit and it pop the side curtain and seat back air bags. Right rear wheel and bumper was affected as well. Total was 8.5K. The seat back part is $1900 by itself. Yikes! Cost should range aound 12K. Hopefull the Frame is ok! I think it could be either or with the total loss.
