Steering wheel finish deterioration?

Okay, I have an 08 G37s 6MT with the aluminum trim and leather seats. I noticed that the black finish on the steering wheel, not the horn area but the trim around the cruise control and radio function buttons, is coming off and if scratched at with a fingernail will completely remove it.....I know I know "then don't scratch at it" but seriously? I thought the Infiniti would have better quality than that......if the previous owner used plasti dip on it would it act that way? Anyone else have this issue?

It shouldn't. They use a different material with the newer ones that don't have a finish on them. It's just black. Take it back in if you can.

Happened to me too and the dealership replaced it under warranty.

Noticed the same thing on my steering wheel. If you even grazed it with your fingernail you would scratch it. Unacceptable! Took it to the dealer and demanded it get replaced, along with the alum trim that was scratched on both sides and around the shifter. Also told them to replace my leather bubble seat, actual shifter, and side mirror bezels that were completely faded. All this was completely replaced without a peep.

Toughest part though to get covered was the leather seat. Due to it being the most expensive. My alum trim has already begun to show scratches again, so better believe I'll be back before my warranty ends in November. I find hard to believe Infiniti would put this type of cheap material in a $40K car. Moral of the story guys..When in doubt...take to the dealer and make demands.

Steering wheels are replaced under warranty! Been discussed many times. The new onesare much better and dont scratch like the older ones. I believe 08 and 09 had the issue. I can peel it very easily with just touching it with my fingernail. I've tried on the new ones and has not scratched. I'm sure it will with a good amount of force, but hold up very well in everyday use, unlike the older wheel bezels.

Its a very common issue. Crazy to think they would put such a sensitive surface in the most handled part of the car!!. I am thinking of getting some matte paint from a hobby store and filling in the scratches that way. The seat leather in the 08 is of similar poor quality.

The trim sells for about $25 on ebay and there is DIY for the replacement.
