I used Adams 3-step polishes with the porter cable. It took 3 passes of severe swirl and haze remover, then one pass of the normal swirl and haze remover, then the fine machine polish. Took about an hour or so.

You mentioned that you can still see it if you look at it a certain way. You can add something a little more aggressive to your arsenal, rubbing compound.
Next time use that first (for scratches to this degree) and then on to your polishes. You'll save time and likely remove the scratch completely.

Anytime that you actually see a cat on your car, don't run at it or scare it off however tempting that may be, the claws only come out when they are scared or threatened, usually they just leave their paw prints...
