Stolen Key

I woke up Saturday morning and I had left the garage door open over night. They stole a bunch of tools and my spare key to the G. For some reason I thought it was a good idea to keep the key in the garage...

I'm really surprised they didn't just steal the car, who knows maybe push start was over their heads, or they chickened out. But the police said to get the key re-programmed because someone could follow me and get the car later. So I made an appointment to get that taken care of. For now though I still have to drive it to work. I parked it outside the window of my office where there's cameras and probably 50 windows looking down at it and threw on the club for the steering wheel. Hope that's good enough.

They're lucky they didn't wake me up, that would have been messy.

Wake you up? Your lucky they didnt come in the house and shoot you in the head while you were sleeping. Even if you get it reprogrammed the jerks will undoubtedly come back to your house to try and steal the car at some point. They are most likely too stupid to realize you will get it reprogrammed.

Can never be too careful. I hear ya though. I pray I don't find somebody trying to get into my house or break into my car. I have to many guns and it would be too much paperwork. Except they arnt getting into my house since its like Fort. Knox

No doubt, could have been much worse.

They didn't steal the car because starting it would have woken you up. You can't steal a car like that from a garage. That's asking to be shot. They took the spare key so they can take the car while you're at work, or at the grocery store.

My only suggestion would be to get the keys reprogrammed, like you're already doing.

Don't get it reprogrammed. Instead, wire up your car with hidden cameras and lojack, gps or whatever. Then park it outside your house and wait....

I got a "new" key on ebay, turns out it was used. But for $30 I don't really care, it's just a backup key. Dealer de-activated the stolen key, put a new battery in both the keys I have now and re-programmed them for $70. All in all not too bad.

I agree that cold-starting my car (with Tanabes) would have woken me up, but I think it was one dude who was driving, and he couldn't just leave his car out front for obvious reasons. The reason I say that is the tools he stole were in cases that would have filled up two hands. And many other expensive tools were left. Either way, with the new keys I feel a lot better and will definitely be on top of keeping the damn garage door shut. My friend at work sent me this link, website looks kind of cheesy but he said it works. Protectrix Wireless Automatic Garage Door Closer Timer Opener Security Accessory.

I like the wait and find out tactic. You should have the police do the bait car thing.
