looks like several people have said the same thing about bmws as i have. i've been tempted to get a 335, but i agree... the G won me over. not because it's a hot car, also because i loved my G35!

I've loved BMWs since the 2002 in the early 1970's, I even have a 10 year BMW CCA pin in the desk drawer. But, I must agree that the image of a BMW owner has changed over the years, as have the cars. Comic comments like those on Top Gear about BMW owners acknowledge a stereotype that has become far more common in recent years. I'm sorry to see it happen, there are still many very nice people that drive / collect BMW classics. IMHO BMW owners have been painted with too wide a brush.

I've also been a big fan of BMW's for a long time, and was really looking forward to getting one. But the image (and stereotype) of BMW has changed a lot, and it's gotten away from what I enjoy about the cars. Now the dealers have a "lifestyle" store, and people have way too many preconceived notions about what a BMW represents. Owning a BMW involves too much "noise", and seeing as I actually care what my employees and clients think, I have a hard time becoming a BMW guy. I have a BMW motorbike, and that's annoying enough. When people ask what kind of bike I ride, and I say "BMW", their eyebrows go up immediately, as if the name itself is somehow impressive. They don't know the first thing about motorbikes, but they know the brand and image.

That being said, they make great bikes and cars. I just don't like getting painted with the "lifestyle" brush.

Nope, not even if they gave it to me for free. I loved this car like a fat kid loves cake, but after the banging, revving and shifting problems, no way.

I hear ya. I just wish the brush hadn't turned negative over the years...
I saw a BMW stalled on the side of a mountain road stuck in snow and needed help. Some people passing him laughed, a driver ahead of me made a "rude jesture". I called the CHP. If he was driving a different "lifestyle" today, or if BMW had the image of twenty years ago, I think some people would have treated him differently.

I believe that, and it's unfortunate. The company have no one to blame but themselves. They marketed "The Ultimate Driving Machine", and over time, they haven't really maintained their end of the deal. If they'd kept putting their money into product quality instead of selling BMW brand bicycles and golf ***** in their lifestyle store, they'd probably still be the "smart choice" (by that I mean the highest quality car for the money). But they've let image overtake substance, and they're happy to admit that their cars are more expensive, but not as high quality, as the japanese. They'll say their cars have more "passion", "character", "personality", etc.

But I don't feel too bad for them. They still outsell Infiniti two to one, and they maintain their iconic status.

All I know is that when I test drove the BMW, my wife groaned, and said "You're not going to be one of THOSE guys, are you?" I'm not sure what she meant, but it didn't sound very positive...

Seeing how I already have a G37, I wouldn't buy another G37 again (like Blackjack did, that crazy yuppie haha). On the other hand, I might be willing to get the next generation G depending on the body styling and engine implementation. If they go FI, then I'd definitely consider it.

I've had my fair share of problems with my 08 model, most recently the battery dying on me for the second time. I still have the dreaded reverse brake squeal, which can be annoying. I also had my dash adhesive reapplied to get rid of the ticking noises. Other than that, the car has been pretty reliable. Not bad for a first year model.

I'm predicting that in 3 years they're going to have a supercharged or turbocharged IPL G Coupe, so that's something that would get my attention.

^ Yep! +1 I don't think they should rebadge the GTR, just offer a TT / SC G.
