Just curious... what year is your car?

Well....driving last night, and two significant things happened, and one less significant. One, my check engine light came on, and code P0420 is being lobbed at me. Two, my "fixed" transmission is now grinding going into 2nd gear. And the third, and not so significant thing is, when I pop my hood now and raise it, something inside of it tumbles all the way down to the bottom. What the hell is it with this car?
