Jeez, learning stick on this car is difficult!

Does anyone have any tips on how to drive properly and smoothly in THIS PARTICULAR car?
This is my first manual car, but I have driven several of my friend's rides and none have been this unforgiving...

So far I have noticed that:
1) on upshifts, if I shift around 3000RPM on all gears (except for 1-->2 shift), it is butter smooth
2) 1-->2 shift requires a little more time for the RPMs to drop before letting the clutch out
3) 1.5k RPM seems like the sweet spot for starting from a stop

Right now I'm trying to get better at downshifting into 2nd gear right before a turn... I just can't get it smooth even though I think I'm rev-matching with decent accuracy

Yeah, the G37 is probably not the best car to learn on, but look at it this way: If you can master this MT, then you shouldn't have a problem driving any other MT out there. I can't really give you any tips because this is something that you have to "learn" and adjust to on your own, but I will say that you should probably avoid looking at the tach so much and learn to feel and hear the engine instead. Usually the only time I look at the tach is when I'm running ***** out through the gears, just to make sure I don't go beyond redline.

This will likely help: clean the throttle bodies. The reason it will help is that the car will idle and run much smoother than before, facilitating easier shifting and particularly an easier time starting off in 1st gear. I don't have any issue with the MT on the car as I have had and driver numerous MT cars over the past 25 years or so, but it made driving it smoother for me.

idk but i learned on a Z so the G wasn't super hard, but it did take some time getting used to. Honestly I heel-to-toe shift when im downshifting because i like to shift into the neutral before I shift and by that time the RMPs drop low so I rev up to 3-4K and then go into the next gear and for me its pretty smooth. But every now and then I get lazy and miss it though lol

Black Betty,

What's the best way to go about cleaning the throttle bodies on this car? Could I have Infiniti do that for me? How often would you say to clean it? Every 10, 20k?

The dealership will rape you on something like this that is a very easy DIY.

Buy a couple of cans of throttle body cleaner from your local auto parts store. CRC or Seafaom Deep Creep. disconnect the rubber accordion like paft of the intake tubing from the TB. Remove the 4 screws holding the TB on. You'll see the grime build up on the butterfly. I used a toothbrush and a clean lint free tower. Spray the cleaner on they brush or wipe until you can get it off. Clean both front and back side. Put the TB back on with the 4 screws. Done. Do the other side just the same.

Every 10K or so should do it, whenever you change your air filters. It's not listed as a routine maintenance item but it should be. I neglected it till I was over 50K but should have done it sooner.

This is my first Manual car as well, I'm probably smooth 85%of the time. I test drove a 370z a couple of months ago, and I liked the gearbox/shifter much better.

It took me a few months to consistently drive this car smoothly.

It can be frustrating at first, but once you get it down you won't regret getting it

++

I'm able to get that shift a lot more often now. I wish I could get all the other gears to feel like that!

Do this!

You can do this in like 2 mins and it helps a ton. Shifts much smoother...didn't believe but thought since it was so easy that I would give it a try and was pleasantly surprised.

I learned to drive on trucks and i found that the principle is the same for most cars. In lower gear, release the clutch slower than higher gears. (if your driving normally, or slow). If your driving hard then you want to shift quick. The only time this doesnt work for me is when the car has an uprated clutch. Engagement is very tricky then. So you can try 1 -> 2 shifts slow, and a little quicker for 2 - > 3.

this was the FIRST stick car i learned to drive.

i had about 2 hours over 7-9 days on a mazda 626.

but i was able to drive it home from the dealer stalling once on a huge hill.

The best i can say is let the clutch out slowly/smoothly while at the same time trying not to ride the clutch.

oxymoronic, yes but best i can say until you are good enough to shift quickly.

The G37 was my first stick car aswell. I hated it in the beginning. I did regret buying the 6MT at one point. Took me a couple months getting used too and now I love it! Keep practicing and you'll get better! Goodluck
