First oil change question

Hi, I am doing my first oil change tomorrow on mine G37x coupe and I have free first service coupon from dealer. However that would cover cheapo oil only I guess? Would you suggest getting synthetic instead and pay from pocket? Or it is Ok to stay one more cycle on regular non synthetic? Thanks!

My personal opinion is go to Walmart and buy whatever full synthetic you want (I would do Mobil1 or Penzoil Ultra) then take that to the dealership and have them use that.

That is not a problem, I am more worry - should it run more than 3K on regular oil or it is safe to use synthetic already? Also I don't want to loose free service since not much free that Infiniti could offer normally (I use to own G35 sedan before).

I go 3750K between changes (obviously I don't make it to the dealer right at 3750) and I started using Mobil1 but switched to Royal Purple.

Nice thing with that you can tell if the service guy actually puts your oil in ... first time they didn't and the guy tried to keep my Royal Purple. He didn't count on me checking it right there ...no purple, I raised holy heck!

I've also heard that you should wait to switch to full synthetic until the second or third oil change....

yeah every car I've had I've run it 3000 on the original oil then changed to a full synthetic. You don't have to wait any specified amount of time to change over

That is something I have never heard and would be amazed if there were ANY empirical evidence to support it

Agree, but that what I heard before from Infiniti when I use to bring G35 for first service to the dealer too. They don't suggest to go full synthetic first oil change.

Did the tech tell you that or did the salesman tell you that?

I've talked to salesman before that say it's impossible to do something in the G and I've shown them on my own G or in the manual and they just give me a blank stare. Some salesman really don't take pride in their work and never get to know their products.

I have NEVER heard that before and if there is any evidence to that statement I would LOVE to see it, I think it would be a real help to the Infiniti community...I just don't think there is any

That was told by person who is taking cars for oil change in Infiniti dealership. He said also - that is what Infiniti recomends but you are owner and you could do anything you like.

Yeah I am pretty sure the "person who is taking cars for oil change in Infiniti dealership" just doesn't know what they're talking about. I can't find that anywhere in any Infiniti publishings or anyone I know that works for Infiniti.

Like I said, if there is any evidence behind that I think it would really benefit the G community, so share it if there is!

That is pathetic. I hope you had a nice chat with the service manager, and reported the dealership to the BBB. You can be sure they're ripping people off on a regular basis. Makes me wonder if the dealers even use ester oil when people pay extra for it.

I honestly have no idea how these guys sleep at night.

I am sure most of US mechanics having no deep knowledge of modern cars, all they do is oil change and tire rotations most of the time. However if you don't trust official company representative words, whom you should trust? Call Japan and ask Nissan president to talk?
I did warranty engine repair on mine former G35 sedan, I waited about two month until it is completed. When I was asking why it takes so long, dealer told me - we are waiting for Nissan mechanic arrive with part to do repair!!!!

Depending on their certifications, mechanics actually know A LOT about "modern" cars...

and according to some "official company representative words" they have told me you can't make all the doors on the G unlock at one time...yet I've shown them on the spot that they are wrong. And they've said you can't make an A/T unlock when you put it in park...and I've shown them to their face that they are wrong.

All I'm saying is just because they work for a dealership, that doesn't mean at all that they truly know what they are talking about.

Great words to live by -- TRUST BUT VERIFY. That's why I keep saying, if there is evidence for this claim I would really like to see it so that people can be correctly informed!

Oh yeah .... I got something out of it. It was not an Infiniti dealership but rather a Nissan, we bought it used. Part of their sales tricks were "3 for Free"
For three years:
Free oil changes at 3700 intervals (since changed to 7500)
Free car washes (no thanks Mr. filthy sponges
Free Rotations
And loaner cars

I can't believe some goober was stupid enough not to use the Royal Purple, given how easy it is to tell. The first time I went I had 5 quarts of Mobil1 sitting on the front seat in the Mobil1 box. They were instructed to us it. When they brought the car around I get in and there is the box still sitting in the front seat. They claimed they didn't see it ..... more like he forgot to take the case out.

Frankly it's gotten to the point you need to:
Once the car has been turned over to you, you then ask if you can speak with the tech that worked on your car. Then when he comes out, insist he take you back and show you the empties.

Probably going to get flamed and links to a bunch of reports but, in my personal experience it really doesn't make a difference what oil you use. It's more a question of how often you change the oil and how long you intend to keep the car. If you going to keep the car > 100,000 miles it might pay off to use synthetic, otherwise I would stick with good old dino oil and change it every 3500 miles or so. Think about this, if synthetic was so much better why wouldn't Nissan/Infiniti put it in to start with? (Don't say they are cheap because how much would it really add to the cost of the car) I had in all 3 G's - all run with dino oil changed at a dealership, usually Nissan. I usually get a new car every 3-4 yrs, so I would never benefit from long term use of synthetic.
