'08 vs '09 Paddle Shifters

Hi, I'm new around here. Trying to decide if a G37S would work for me. Is it true that an '08 has a 5 speed auto and an '09 has a 7 speed auto like in the 370Z?

I've driven the 370Z and loved the paddles. Will I need to be looking at '09's to get the rev matching like the 370Z?

Also, how much slower is the 5 speed's shifting compared to the 7 speed?

Thank you.

09 is the first year the 7AT was introduced in the G line of cars. The 09 definitely down shift rev matches your paddle shifts. I have not driven the 5Speed, some claim that it feels "sportier" than the 7AT, whatever that means. I love the 7AT and the shifts are reasonably quick stock and the shifts feel aggressive in a good way. I suggest grounding kits to improve the shifting response further. Welcome to the forums, there is a lot of great information here.

08 = 5 spd auto w/ paddle shifters
09 = 7 spd auto w/ paddle shifters

if you are talking about synchro rev matching like 370z, it's only for manual.

I agree with this 100 percent!

The 09 with the 7AT will also blip the throttle when downshifting manually to rev match.

Thanks for the info guys. Over at the370.com forum they're saying that the 370Z paddles shift more aggressively, is this true? I don't mean to start a war here, and it might make sense since the 370Z is more pure sport and the G37 leans more toward luxury.

someone correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think you can get the 37S in 7AT. If you want the 37S you have to get the 6MT but you can get the 7AT and add the "sports package"

I don't know if that matters to you but just be aware of it

In Canada it's the opposite. There the G37 Coupe, G37x Coupe, G37S (7AT), and then G37 6MT. In the description it says "The G37 6MT comes with all the features of the G37S" and then later on it's mentions the "S badge" on the trunk.

I suppose it's possible but I'd be surprised. From my understanding the transmission programming is the same.

The 370z is a less refined so its going to be noiser and bumpier to drive. Its completely sport. The G37 provides a refinement to the ride. So, yes, the 370z will feel more aggressive. The choice between the two cars is really a value judgement between sport and luxury. Keep in mind, the g37 gives a very solid performance albeit not on par with the 370z but not too far behind. Drive them both and go with whichever you like best

paddle shifting would be the same between g37 and 370. it wont shift any faster if its not dual clutch like bmw smg, vw dsg etc .... 370 guys always think there car is superior to ours

Wrong... I just purchased a G37S 7AT. Been a G owner since 05 and all of the G AT's have had the throttle bliip since then. 05 was the first year for that feature.

DRM has been in the nissan line up since the invention of the unreliable CVT.
The 370z has a faster feel when shifting but actual shifting speed inside the tranny is the same.
The G is more tame. I prefer a Z performance wise but need back seats so I have a G. Luxury isn't important to me but I do need some level of practicality (back seats)
The G37 is a great car. There is the G37-6mt sport and the G37S. One is manual, the other automatic. Both look identical. The auto is a package but you can't dealer install it. So the 6mt isn't any more of a sport than a paddle. Its the same crap with a different transmission. The auto costs more because auto trannies are more expensive. The 7at is as impressive as most DSG's considering its a slushbox. Its the most incredible slushbox in production IMHO!

I just traded in my 08 G coupe with the 5sp AT for the 09 7sp AT, the 5sp does match the revs on downshifts. The difference I felt was when you hold down the gas, you feel the car run through the gears quick as sh.. In the 09 7sp AT, its not as rough, much more 'refined'. The G and the Z have the same tranny and engine, but the Z is tuned to be more of a sports car. My buddy has a 370z I raced in my 5sp AT, and he beat me 3 in a row. The Z has 2 more hp...., and its a lighter car. It all depends on what you like, Luxury and sporty, or straight up sport.
