Has Anyone Been Down This Road?
Has Anyone Been Down This Road?
I've had my G37x for 3 1/2 months now, and I'm suffering from a huge dose of buyers remorse (sort of). I'm not remorseful about the choice of a G37 coupe, or the expenditure. I'm really regretting having to get the automatic transmission in order to get the awd.
I came from a '99 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX, so I really have an appreciation for the awd and its ability to allow for fun driving on the rain slick roads here in the pacific northwest. However, the concession to the automatic, even in DS, is totally sucking the fun out of an otherwise great car with the G coupe.
I have not yet driven a 6MT, but I have driven a 370Z, and I'm ready to go talk to my Infiniti salesman about the possibility of trading my x coupe towards a G37s 6MT.
Anyone here actually made a short turnaround like this before? I'm willing to pay a reasonable price for my error in judgement, but I don't want to take a horrific beating. Anyone have a similar experience (not necessarily the auto. vs man., just the wrong choice out of the blocks)? If so, did you make the change, and how badly did you have to pay through the nose to get it done.
Curious if anyone has actually corrected a similar mistake.
Thanks,
Marty

Not exactly a buyers remorse since there was nothing I could do about it since G37s are only offered in AT transmissions in the Gulf, but I was seconds away from pulling the trigger on a trade with a US Spec 6MT
I have seen people do it before, but it will be painful to your wallet.
Have you driven a AT with a valvebody upgrade? After experiencing a few, my next G will be a AT (again). For the record, I've owned 11 MT cars, and 2 AT cars.
As far as rain goes, the right tires will work wonders

I was so close to getting rid of the G all together about 6 months after I got it, then I got bitten by the mod bug and decided to keep it. My issue with the car is that I don't use it as a daily driver. my daily driver is worth about 4 grand, so driving that over the infiniti on a daily basis really bothered me (still does) but I have learned to live with it.
On the price, I had mine for about 6 months (3,000 miles), was able to get about 33,500 as a trade in(paid just a touch above 40,000 new including tax, title, tags)
Infiniti may be able to get you a little better number then I was offered (I was at a jeep dealer about to pull the trigger on a SRT8 Grand Cherokee)
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

MT or AT, each has it's advantages and disadvantages as their offered in the G37, both falling way short IMPO and not worth the hit to swap. I'd make the most of it and focus on the positives of the AT. Save the MT for your next car.
I ended up wanting more sport then I first thought as well but MT isn't a solution for me.. Dual clutch is what I'm looking for and considering you bought a AT, I'd bet you'd be happier with the best of both worlds as well. Hopefully Infiniti will move in this direction with something under a GTR.. if not.. sayonara.

So you faced about a +/- $6,500.00 bite to make the leap. That's in the neighborhood I was thinking I might get hit. I guess I'd have a hard time justifying it to myself (single, no kids), especially in the current economic funk the nation and my income is in!
It's just that the lack of feeling connected, being part of the car, is lost with the automatic, even in "manual shift" mode. I'm sure there are some of you who have made the move from a manual to an automatic, and not regretted it, and I thought I could sell myself on it too, however, the joy of driving is massively diminished these days. Diminished, not gone. The G is a really enjoyable car on balance, it just the driver of this particular one that is a problem!
In my more reflective moments I tell myself that if I can stick it out, and let the economy recover, I'll have a great commuter/daily driver, and I can splurge on a genuine "for fun" car.
Thanks for all your responses. I guess I'll let cooler heads prevail this time.

you will probably get murdered by trading in your car back to the dealer at this point. your best bet is to do a private sale to hopefully get some of your money back (minus the tax, licensing, doc fees), or just have someone take over your current payments and roll with the loss and start saving for the X.

So is it worth $2,000 to be driving what you really want to be driving for how ever long you plan on keeping the car?
I hope this example isn't to hard to follow, it makes sense in my head at least. Please keep in mind, those numbers were all related to my SPECIFIC circumstance... I am making no guarantees as to the accuracy of these numbers if you were to go to the dealer tomorrow. I don't know how many miles and the condition you kept your car in (I had 3,000 miles and there was not ONE thing they could find to deduct value for, believe me they tried) The OP may be in an even better circumstance then me, being it is AWD, which is more expensive then 6MT... and the trade may be a little better then mine since it is AT (it is a lot easier to sell an AT, at least in my area)
Words to live by
That is what I did, instead of trading in for an SRT8, and now I have done some subtle little things to it and I love it, haven't thought about trading it since... And hopefully by the time I start thinking the grass is greener on the other side, GTM will be shipping the SCGood luck Emdeebee, I know how annoying it is to keep thinking you would be happier with something else
