I purchased a new 09 G37 Coupe S about 2 months ago.. I just realized the other day (when I was sitting through a car wash) that there is a leak in my roof. This is coming from the seal of the sunroof.. Anyone experience this? took it to the dealer.. they said it was normal.. I am hearing it first.. Any input?

A leaking sunroof is considered normal now??? You gotta be kidding me. 1st of you should never be taking your G through an automatic car wash in the first place. Those things do nightmares to our paint. How bad is it leaking? If its anything significant i'd be at the stealership demanding they do something about it.

 

If you take a hose to the seals, can you make it leak? thats definitely not normal.

 

The sunroof seals are one part of the system to prevent water intrusion. Most sunroof seals i've seen passing water do so be cause one of the several sunroof water drain tubes are completely or partially clogged and this allows water to inundate and overwhelm the seals capacity.

 

That's not entirely correct or a least misleading. The drain tubes are secondary to the seals, i.e. any water that seeps through the seals will make its way into the sunroof frame and drain through the drain tubes out of the car.

So the sunroof seals should prevent most water from getting past the roof opening but the drain system ensures that any water that makes it past does not enter the passenger compartment. If water does make it into the passenger compartment then a drain tube is likely blocked causing water to overflow from the frame.

In your case is it just damp or are you getting water on your seats? If it's the latter then you have a drain problem. If the former then it is normal especially if there's high pressure water being shot directly at the seals. The sunroof specs actually allow for a gap of 0.6 - 2.2 mm between the seal and the roof opening. If you still feel it's a problem the dealer should try to adjust the roof panel even it is within spec.

Ive had this happen too when it rained. I put my hand on the bar in the roof and it was wet, ofcourse when i took it to the dealer they couldnt duplicate it.

 

Nope - I tend to read the service manuals when bored.

 

A leaking sunroof is not normal...I have owned 7 vehicles in my life, all of which had a sunroof and never had a leaking problem on any of them.

Are you sure the dealer didn't have your sunroof installed aftermarket because those things ALWAYS leak.

 

- Just damp...is that suppose to be normal ? I thought there was no water that should get through at all ? Also Just out of curiosity, all of you here who have read this post.. have u guys tried it with your roof ? I mean give it a check either when you are through a Car wash or when its pouring rain ..try and see if your Sunroof seals on the inside is damp .....see if at all any water gets inside ..???
-- I told my dealership .. I am ready to accept that this is normal if he is willing to provide what he just said in writing and Also if in a couple of years if there's any rust spot in the roof area.. I want him to acknowledge the issue -- > he told me to bring the car back after I had further tested the adjustments they just performed, it seems like theres no more sprinkle but sure enough the seal is still damp. I have not had time to make it back.. but will be soon so I thought I would gather some info and thoughts on the forum before I headed back..
